전북도립미술관(관장 이기전)은 오는 22일부터 12월 13일까지 완주 대아수목원 내 대아스페이스에서 소장품 기획전 ‘사건은 없다(Nothing Happens)’를 개최한다.

이번 전시는 미술관 소장품 가운데 사진 2점과 영상 1점을 선보인다. 박세연(1984~)의 〈Untitled 6, AS EVER series〉(2011), 한정식(1937-2022)의 〈고요〉(2005), 육근병(1957~)의 〈Nothing〉(2013)이다. 세 작품은 매체와 세대를 달리하지만, 화면에서 무엇이 일어났는지를 특정하기 어렵다는 공통점을 지닌다.

전시는 사건으로 기록되지 않은 작고 느린 변화와 흔적에 주목한다. 이미지 속 사건과 시점을 확인하려는 관습적인 이미지 읽기 대신, 겉으로 드러나지 않은 채 남은 것들을 드러낸다. 전시 제목의 ‘사건은 없다’는 것은 ‘아무 일도 없다’는 뜻이 아니라, 다만 그것이 사건으로 기록되지 않았다는 의미다.

박세연의 사진 〈Untitled 6, AS EVER series〉는 벽면에 남은 흐릿한 사각형의 흔적을 담고 있다. 무엇이 걸려 있었는지는 알 수 없지만, 사물이 있던 자리를 중심으로 바래지 않은 벽면이 사물의 존재와 그것이 머물렀던 시간을 드러낸다. 작품은 사라진 대상을 보여주는 대신, 대상이 남긴 흔적에 시선을 머물게 한다.

한정식의 〈고요〉는 마른 땅을 가로지르는 정체를 알 수 없는 곡선의 자국을 보여준다. 2017년 국립현대미술관의 ‘한국현대미술작가시리즈’ 사진 부문에 초대된 바 있는 작가는, 1970년대부터 사진에서 대상의 존재성을 지우고 형상을 덜어내는 작업을 지속해왔다. 이 작품에서도 자국이 무엇에 의해 만들어졌는지는 특정되지 않으며, 대상이 사라진 자리에는 표면의 질감과 빛의 계조가 남는다. 무엇이 찍혔는지 알 수 없게 된 화면은 오히려 그곳에 무언가가 존재했음을 생각하게 한다.

육근병의 〈Nothing〉은 비 내리는 마루를 8분여간 담은 영상이다. 촬영 현장의 음향은 모두 제거되었고, 화면은 편집 없이 한 장면으로 이어진다. 사건을 만들어내는 편집의 구조가 사라진 화면에서 관람객은 비가 내리고 표면이 젖어가는 시간을 그대로 마주하게 된다. 육근병은 1992년 카셀 도큐멘타에 백남준에 이어 한국인으로는 두 번째로 초청된 미디어 작가다.

미술관 관계자는 “우리는 이미지 앞에서 먼저 무슨 일이 있었는지를 찾고, 그것이 읽히지 않으면 부족한 이미지라고 여긴다”며 “그러나 세상에는 분명히 일어나고 있으면서도 사건으로 기록되지 않는 일들이 있다”고 말했다. 이어 “이번 전시는 그러한 일들을 담은 소장품을 통해 관람객이 화면에서 무엇을 찾아내기보다, 화면 앞에 오래 머물며 그 안에서 흐르는 시간과 흔적을 바라보는 경험을 제안하고자 한다”고 덧붙였다.

대아스페이스는 전북특별자치도 산림환경연구소와 전북도립미술관의 협업을 통해 마련된 공간으로, 대아수목원 내에 위치해 산림 휴양 방문객이 자연스럽게 미술을 접할 수 있도록 운영된다. 10월까지는 오전 9시부터 오후 6시까지, 11월부터는 오전 9시부터 오후 5시까지 관람할 수 있다. 관람료는 무료이며, 자세한 사항은 전북도립미술관 누리집에서 확인할 수 있다.

The Jeonbuk Provincial Museum of Art (Director Lee Ki-jeon) will be hosting a collection exhibition titled 'Nothing Happens' at the DaeA Space within the DaeA Arboretum in Wanju from October 22 to December 13.

This exhibition will showcase two photographs and one video from the museum's collection. The works include Park Se-yeon's (1984~) 'Untitled 6, AS EVER series' (2011), Han Jeong-sik's (1937-2022) 'Silence' (2005), and Yook Geun-byeong's (1957~) 'Nothing' (2013). Although the mediums and generations of the three works differ, they share the commonality of making it difficult to pinpoint what exactly is happening on the screen.

The exhibition focuses on small and slow changes and traces that are not recorded as events. Instead of the conventional way of reading images to confirm events and moments, it reveals what remains unseen. The title of the exhibition, 'Nothing Happens,' does not mean 'nothing is happening,' but rather that it has not been recorded as an event.

Park Se-yeon's photograph 'Untitled 6, AS EVER series' captures the faint traces of a square shape left on a wall. While it is unknown what was hung there, the untouched wall around the spot where the object was reveals the presence of the object and the time it spent there. Rather than showing the disappeared subject, the work directs the viewer's gaze to the traces left by the subject.

Han Jeong-sik's 'Silence' displays the traces of an unknown curve crossing the dry land. The artist, who was invited to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art's 'Korean Contemporary Artists Series' photography section in 2017, has been continuously removing the existence of subjects and reducing shapes in photographs since the 1970s. In this work, the origin of the traces remains unspecified, and the surface texture and light conditions are left in the place where the subject disappeared. The screen, where it is impossible to discern what was captured, rather makes one think that something existed there.

Yook Geun-byeong's 'Nothing' is an 8-minute video capturing rain falling on a wooden deck. The sound at the shooting scene has been completely removed, and the screen transitions to a single scene without editing. In the absence of the editing structure that creates events, viewers are faced with the time of rain falling and the surface getting wet. Yook Geun-byeong, who was invited to the Kassel Documenta in 1992 as the second Korean media artist after Nam June Paik.

A museum official stated, "We often consider an image lacking if we cannot figure out what happened in it," adding, "However, there are things that clearly happen in the world but are not recorded as events." The official further commented, "Through the collection items in this exhibition, we aim to propose an experience where visitors do not search for something in the screen but rather linger in front of it, observing the flow of time and traces within."

The DaeA Space is a collaborative space created through cooperation between the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province Forest Environment Research Institute and the Jeonbuk Provincial Museum of Art, located within the DaeA Arboretum. It operates from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM until October and from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM starting from November.
