전주 기린미술관이 3월 12일부터 4월 16일까지 ‘그래! 산’을 주제로 경산 출신 송관엽 한국화가 초대전을 연다. 개막식은 3월 13일 오후 4시 30분 미술관에서 열린다. 이번 전시는 전통 수묵의 맥을 현대적으로 풀어온 작가의 최근 작업세계를 집중 조명하는 자리다.

송관엽은 전통 필법과 여백의 미를 바탕으로 하면서도 동시대적 감수성을 화면에 녹여온 작가로 평가받는다. 대학원 졸업 후 공모전 출품을 통해 현장 중심의 실경 산수를 탐구했으며, 이후 한국의 산을 구름과 안개가 어우러진 구성으로 재해석하는 데 몰두했다. 한동안은 먹의 한계를 넘어보기 위해 색으로 화면을 덮는 시도를 이어갔으나, 점차 먹의 농담과 번짐만으로도 자연의 기운을 드러낼 수 있다는 확신에 이르렀다.

최근 작업은 수묵 중심의 간결한 화면이 특징이다. 산과 물, 나무 등 자연 요소를 통해 인간 내면과 시간의 흐름을 상징적으로 드러내며, 여백 속 사유의 공간을 강조한다. 안개와 빛, 그림자를 활용한 공기 원근의 표현은 화면에 깊이를 더하고, 이상적 자연에 대한 철학적 성찰을 담아낸다. 작가는 “현실 풍경과 내면의 이상이 결합된 산을 그리고자 한다”고 설명한다.

그는 벽천 나상목과 송계일 등 근·현대 산수화 원로들에게 사사하며 남종산수의 전통을 익혔다. 이후 자신만의 조형 언어로 확장해 ‘산 이야기’, ‘붓을 든 철학자’ 등 다수의 개인전을 개최했고, 600여 회가 넘는 단체전에 참여했다. 작품은 국립현대미술관, 전북도립미술관 등 주요 기관에 소장돼 있다.

이현옥 관장은 “송관엽의 작업은 단순한 자연 재현을 넘어 기운생동의 미학을 추구한다”며 “서예적 필획의 리듬과 철학적 메시지가 공존한다”고 평했다. 전통과 현대의 경계를 넘나들며 10년 주기로 변모해 온 그의 산수는, 이번 전시에서 한층 절제된 수묵의 깊이로 관람객과 마주할 예정이다.

Jeonju Girin Art Museum will host an invitation exhibition by Korean painter Song Kwan-yeop, originally from Gyeongsan, on the theme of 'Yes! Mountains' from March 12 to April 16. The opening ceremony will take place at the museum on March 13 at 4:30 p.m. This exhibition will focus on the artist's recent works that modernize the essence of traditional ink painting.

Song Kwan-yeop is recognized for incorporating contemporary sensibilities into his art while grounding it in the beauty of traditional brush techniques and empty spaces. After graduating from graduate school, he delved into on-site landscape painting through competitions, exploring the representation of Korean mountains with clouds and mist. He initially attempted to cover his canvases with colors to surpass the limits of ink, but eventually became convinced that the essence of nature could be conveyed through ink's simplicity and blur alone.

His recent works are characterized by simple ink-focused compositions. Symbolically revealing the inner self of humans and the flow of time through natural elements such as mountains, water, and trees, he emphasizes the space for contemplation within the empty spaces. The expression of aerial perspective using mist, light, and shadows adds depth to the paintings, encapsulating philosophical reflections on an idealized nature. The artist explains, "I aim to depict mountains that combine the reality of landscapes with the ideals of the inner self."

He learned the tradition of Southern School landscape painting from senior artists like Byungcheon Nasangmok and Song Gye-il, then expanded it into his own artistic language through numerous solo exhibitions such as 'Mountain Stories' and 'Philosopher with a Brush,' as well as participating in over 600 group exhibitions. His works are held in major institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and Jeonbuk Provincial Art Museum.

Director Lee Hyun-ok praised Song Kwan-yeop's work for transcending mere natural representation to pursue an aesthetic of vitality and movement, stating, "The rhythm of calligraphic brushstrokes and philosophical messages coexist." Crossing the boundaries between tradition and modernity and evolving every decade, his ink paintings, showcased in this exhibition, will meet the audience with a deeper restraint of ink.
