국가유산청 국립무형유산원은 ‘2026 이수자뎐(傳)’의 네 번째 공연으로 국가무형유산 처용무 이수자인 이하경이 선보이는 <장구전(杖鼓傳): 처용의 울림, 다섯 개의 궤적>을 오는 19일 오후 4시 국립무형유산원 얼쑤마루 소공연장(전북 전주시)에서 개최한다.

<장구전>은 처용무가 지닌 관용과 나쁜 기운을 물리치는 벽사(辟邪)의 의미를 설장구의 힘찬 리듬과 춤으로 풀어낸 작품이다. 흰색에서 시작해 청색·황색·적색·흑색으로 이어지는 오방색의 흐름 속에서 만남과 갈등, 화해와 상생, 순환의 과정을 그려낸다.

이번 공연의 가장 큰 특징은 처용무와 설장구를 하나의 무대 언어로 결합했다는 점이다. 처용무의 움직임과 설장구의 역동적인 가락이 어우러지고, 무용수가 직접 장구를 연주하며 춤과 소리를 함께 만들어낸다. 이를 통해 처용무의 정신을 전통적인 춤의 형식에 머물지 않고 새로운 방식으로 보여준다.

공연은 총 5장으로 구성된다. 만물이 정지된 공(空)에서 생명의 기운이 깨어나는 ‘제1장: 태동(胎動)’, 처용이라는 주체로 깨어난 자아가 외부의 존재인 타자와 마주해 대립과 화해를 겪는 ‘제2장: 응시(凝視)’, 오방의 기운이 처용무 고유 진법으로 확장되는 ‘제3장: 질서(秩序)’, 정가의 서정과 몽금포타령의 흥이 어우러져 무대와 객석의 경계를 허물고 가무일체를 보여주는 ‘제4장: 상생(相生)’, 모든 색과 소리가 흑(黑) 안에서 하나로 귀결되는 대단원 ‘제5장: 순환(循環)’으로 이어진다. 무용수와 거문고·피리·대금·타악 연주자들이 함께 무대를 채우며 오방색의 흐름과 처용의 여정을 음악과 움직임으로 풀어낸다.

창작자인 이하경 이수자는 “전통의 틀을 지키면서도 관객과 진정성 있게 소통하기 위해 화려한 기교보다 무용수의 호흡과 움직임에서 나오는 소리에 집중했다”고 말했다. 이어 “처용이 과거의 유산에 머무르지 않고, 오늘의 관객과 이어지는 매개가 되기를 바란다”고 밝혔다.

The National Intangible Heritage Center, National Intangible Heritage Institute, will host the fourth performance of '2026 Successor Series' featuring Lee Ha-kyung, a successor of the national intangible heritage, Choyeongmu, presenting on the 19th at 4 p.m. at the Usu Maru Small Theater at the National Intangible Heritage Institute in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do.

is a piece that expresses the meaning of warding off evil spirits possessed by Choyeongmu through the powerful rhythm and dance of the seoljanggu. It depicts encounters and conflicts, reconciliation and coexistence, and the process of circulation within the flow of five colors starting from white and leading to blue, yellow, red, and black.

The most significant feature of this performance is the combination of Choyeongmu and seoljanggu as one stage language. The movements of Choyeongmu and the dynamic rhythms of seoljanggu merge, with the dancers playing the janggu themselves, creating dance and sound together. Through this, the spirit of Choyeongmu is presented in a new way, not confined to the traditional form of dance.

The performance consists of five acts. Starting from the awakening of life energy in the void in 'Act 1: Genesis,' it progresses to the confrontation and reconciliation between the awakened self as Choyeong and the external existence in 'Act 2: Gaze,' expanding into the unique rhythm of Choyeongmu in 'Act 3: Order,' breaking down the boundaries between the stage and the audience with the fusion of the elegance of the court music and the excitement of Monggeumpotaryeong in 'Act 4: Coexistence,' and culminating in 'Act 5: Circulation,' where all colors and sounds converge into one within the black. Dancers and musicians playing geomungo, flute, daegeum, and percussion instruments fill the stage together, expressing the flow of five colors and the journey of Choyeong through music and movement.

Lee Ha-kyung, the creator and successor, stated, "While adhering to the framework of tradition, I focused on the sounds that come from the breath and movements of the dancers rather than flashy techniques to communicate genuinely with the audience." He further expressed, "I hope Choyeongmu will not remain in the past heritage but become a medium connecting with today's audience."

The performance is free seating and operates on a pre-reservation basis.
