12월 12일 오후 2시 30분경, 논산시 가야곡면 호남고속도로 하행선에서 전주의 Y초등학교 학생 34명이 탑승한 47인승 고속버스에서 화재가 발생했다. 이 버스는 대전에서 현장 체험학습을 마친 뒤 전주로 이동 중이었으며, 탑승자 전원이 긴급 대피해 인명 피해는 없었다.

탑승했던 학생들에 따르면 차량 내부에서 냄새가 나기 시작한 것은 오후 2시경이었다. 일부 학생들은 1시 50분경부터 이상한 냄새를 감지했다고 증언했다. 이후 버스는 갓길에 정차해 대체 차량을 기다리고 있었으나, 차량 내부에 연기와 탄 냄새가 점점 심해지며 상황이 급박해졌다.

학생들과 교사는 오후 2시 30분경 차량을 빠져나왔고, 불과 1~2분 뒤 버스는 검은 연기에 휩싸이며 전소됐다. 특히, 이상 징후가 화재 발생 30분 전부터 포착됐음에도 불구하고 학생들이 버스 전소 직전에야 탈출할 수 있었던 경위에 대해서는 조사가 필요해 보인다.

학생들은 한국도로공사 직원의 도움으로 안전한 장소로 이동했으며, 이후 대체 차량을 통해 귀가했다. 사고를 경험한 학생들 중 일부는 병원 진료를 받았고, 심리 치료도 지원 받을 예정이다.

경찰과 소방당국은 버스 뒷부분 엔진룸에서 화재가 시작됐을 가능성을 포함해 사고 원인을 조사하고 있다. 한편 학부모들은 철저한 조사를 통해 사고 원인을 명확히 밝히고, 노란버스(학생 운송 차량)의 관리 기준을 강화할 것을 요구하고 있다.

이번 사고는 다행히 인명 피해 없이 마무리됐으나, 학부모들과 교육계는 관리 부실로 인한 사고 가능성을 경계하며 재발 방지를 위한 근본적인 대책 마련을 촉구하고 있다.

At around 2:30 p.m. on December 12, a fire broke out on a 47-seat express bus carrying 34 students from Y Elementary School in Jeonju on the Honam Expressway in Gaya-gok, Nonsan City. The bus was returning to Jeonju after a field trip in Daejeon, and all passengers were able to evacuate in time, resulting in no casualties.

According to the students on board, a strange smell started to emanate from inside the vehicle around 2 p.m. Some students testified that they detected the odd smell as early as 1:50 p.m. The bus pulled over to the side of the road to wait for a replacement vehicle, but the situation became urgent as the smoke and burnt smell inside the vehicle intensified.

The students and teachers evacuated the vehicle around 2:30 p.m., and within 1-2 minutes, the bus was engulfed in black smoke and completely burned down. Notably, an investigation is needed into why the students were able to escape only just before the bus was completely burned, despite signs of abnormality being detected 30 minutes before the fire broke out.

With the help of Korea Expressway Corporation staff, the students were moved to a safe place and returned home via a replacement vehicle. Some of the students who experienced the accident received medical treatment and are also expected to receive psychological counseling.

The police and fire authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, including the possibility that the fire started in the engine room at the back of the bus. Meanwhile, parents are demanding a thorough investigation to clearly identify the cause of the accident and strengthen the management standards for school buses.

While this accident fortunately ended without any casualties, parents and educators are calling for fundamental measures to prevent recurrence, wary of the possibility of accidents due to poor management.
