전주세계소리축제조직위원회와 국립극장이 공동으로 제작하는 2025 소리축제 개막공연-국립창극단(예술감독 겸 단장 유은선)의 신작 <심청> 제작발표회가 10일 오후 2시 국립극장 하늘극장에서 열렸다.

제작발표회는 이왕준 소리축제 조직위원장과 박인건 국립극장장 등 공동제작 관계자를 비롯해 연출과 극본을 맡은 요나 김, 헤르베르트 무라무어(무대디자인), 팔크 바우어(의상디자인), 벤야민 뤼트케(영상․라이브카메라), 프랑크 쉔발트(무대․의상 어시스턴트) 등 공연 제작의 주요 관계자들이 참석해 공동제작에 대한 취지나 작품의 제작 방향 등을 소개하는 자리로 마련됐다.

<심청>은 국립창극단 전 단원을 포함해 130여 명이 출연하는 대작으로, 유럽에서 활발히 활동 중이며 지난해 국립오페라단 <탄호이저> 연출로 호평을 받은 연출가 요나 김이 극본과 연출을 맡아 첫 판소리 기반 작품에 도전한다.

고전에 새로운 숨결을 불어 넣고 동시대적인 담론을 제시하는 연출로 정평이 나 있는 만큼 판소리‘심청가’에 대한 새로운 해석도 기대를 모은다. 이번 작품에서는 원전 곳곳에 녹아든 유교적 가치관에 저항하고 주인공‘심청’을 자신의 목소리를 내지 못하고 힘을 가지지 못한 채 억압당했던 이 땅의 모든 사회적 약자를 대변하는 인물로 그려내는 등 기존과 전혀 다른 관점을 제시한다.

또한 한승석이 작창, 작곡가 최우정이 작곡을 맡아 공동 음악감독 체제로 진행한다. 독일 창작진이 무대 미술에 참여해 현대적인 무대 미장센을 선보일 예정이다.

박인건 극장장은“먼저 공동제작의 결단을 내려준 소리축제 측에 감사의 말을 전한다. 국립극장의 공동제작이 처음인 것만큼 몸집을 키워서 이 작품을 세계적으로 알릴 수 있도록 노력하겠다”고 밝혔다.

이왕준 조직위원장은“2년 가깝게 인큐베이팅을 시작으로 제작발표회가 현실화 되어서 감회가 새롭고 의미가 크다. 공동제작의 형태가 한국에서는 익숙하지 않아서 어려움이 있지만, 이러한 새로운 시도에 대해 많은 지지와 성원을 해주시길 바란다”고 강조했다.

The production presentation of the opening performance of the 2025 Sound Festival, jointly produced by the Jeonju World Sound Festival Organizing Committee and the National Theater, was held at 2 p.m. on the 10th at the Sky Theater of the National Theater.

The production presentation was attended by Lee Wong-jun, the chairman of the Sound Festival Organizing Committee, Park In-geon, the director of the National Theater, and other co-production officials. It featured key production personnel such as director and playwright Yona Kim, Herbert Muramore (stage design), Falk Bauer (costume design), Benjamin Lutke (video/live camera), and Frank Schenbalt (stage/costume assistant), introducing the concept of the joint production and the direction of the work.

"Shimcheong" is a large-scale production involving over 130 performers, including former members of the National Changgeuk Company. Director Yona Kim, who received acclaim for directing the National Opera's "Tanhoizer" last year, challenges his first pansori-based work by taking on both the script and direction.

With a reputation for breathing new life into classics and presenting contemporary discourse, expectations are high for a new interpretation of the pansori "Shimcheongga." The production portrays the protagonist "Shimcheong" as a figure representing all the social underdogs of this land who have been oppressed without being able to voice their own opinions or exert their strength, resisting the Confucian values ingrained throughout the original story.

Han Seung-seok will handle the composition, and composer Choi Woo-jung will serve as co-music directors. German creative teams will contribute to the stage art, presenting a modern stage setting.

Park In-geon, the theater director, expressed gratitude to the Sound Festival for making the joint production decision first. He stated, "As this is the first joint production for the National Theater, we will strive to promote this work globally by expanding its scale."

Lee Wong-jun, the organizing committee chairman, emphasized, "It is a great moment to see the production presentation materialize after nearly two years of incubation. Joint productions are not common in Korea, so there have been challenges, but we hope for much support and encouragement for this new endeavor."
