지역 미술의 다양성과 개별성 확립에 기여한 박민평 화가의 50년 예술 궤적 조명

전북도립미술관(관장 이애선)은 전북미술사연구시리즈의 네 번째 기획전으로 《박민평: 변주된 풍경》 전시를 오는 25일부터 7월 13일까지 본관 1~4전시실에서 개최한다고 밝혔다.

이번 전시는 1970~80년대 전북 미술계에서 구상과 비구상을 넘나들며 독자적 화풍을 구축해온 고(故) 박민평(1940~2019) 화가를 조명한다. 지역의 구상회화가 주류를 이루던 시기, 반복을 거부하며 색면과 심상을 결합한 회화를 실험한 박민평의 작업 세계는 지역 미술계에 새로운 다양성과 개별성을 부여했다는 평가다.

부안 출신의 박민평은 전주공고 재학 중 허병 화백으로부터 본격적인 미술 교육을 받고, 이후 서라벌예술대학을 졸업한 뒤 군산과 익산에서 교직을 시작했다. 1971년 전주 성심여자중·고등학교에 부임하면서 본격적인 작가 활동에 몰두하며 지역 화단과의 연대를 이어갔다.

전시는 ‘사실-색면-이야기-변주된 풍경’이라는 소주제를 따라 총 105점의 작품을 시간 흐름에 따라 구성했다. 고등학생 시절 작품부터 생애 마지막 시기까지의 화풍 변화가 전시실별로 선보인다.

1970년대에는 산과 해바라기 등을 주제로 어둡고 강렬한 색채와 단순화된 형상, 평면적인 구성이 두드러졌다. 1980년대에는 산 하나만을 중심으로 놓는 구도로 변화하면서 색면 추상에 가까운 풍경을 선보였고, 1990년대에는 민화적이고 설화적인 정서를 가미한 색채 실험이 이루어졌다. 2000년대 이후에는 여백의 미와 계절의 색감을 조화시킨 작품들이 등장하며, 산의 형상이 고요한 사유의 대상으로 승화되었다.

전북도립미술관은 박민평의 개인 작업뿐 아니라 그가 참여한 단체전과 지역작가들과의 연대 활동도 함께 조명해, 지역 미술사 연구의 외연을 넓히는 시도로 이번 전시를 구성했다.

이애선 관장은 “이번 전시는 한 작가의 생애를 통해 지역 미술계의 흐름을 복합적으로 보여주는 중요한 연구 성과”라며, “박민평이라는 예술가가 전북 미술에 남긴 흔적과 의미를 되새기는 계기가 되기를 바란다”고 전했다.

Painter Park Min-pyeong's 50-year artistic trajectory highlighted for contributing to the diversity and individuality of regional art

The Jeonbuk Provincial Museum of Art (Director Lee Ae-seon) announced that the exhibition "Park Min-pyeong: Varied Landscapes" will be held from the 25th of this month to July 13th in exhibition halls 1 to 4 of the main building as the fourth installment of the Jeonbuk Art History Research Series.

This exhibition sheds light on the late Park Min-pyeong (1940-2019), who traversed between figurative and non-figurative art in the Jeonbuk art scene of the 1970s and 80s, establishing a unique artistic style. During a time when figurative painting dominated the regional art scene, Park Min-pyeong's experimentation with combining color planes and symbolism, while rejecting repetition, brought new diversity and individuality to the local art scene.

Hailing from Buan, Park Min-pyeong received formal art education from Huh Byeong, a renowned artist, while attending Jeonju High School, and later graduated from Seorabeol University of Arts before starting his teaching career in Gunsan and Iksan. Upon assuming a position at Jeonju Seongsim Girls' Middle and High School in 1971, he dedicated himself to his artistic endeavors and continued to collaborate with local artists.

The exhibition is curated with a total of 105 pieces of artwork under the theme "Reality - Color Planes - Stories - Varied Landscapes," arranged chronologically to showcase the evolution of his artistic style from his high school years to his final days.

In the 1970s, his works focused on themes like mountains and sunflowers, characterized by dark and intense colors, simplified forms, and flat compositions. By the 1980s, his compositions shifted to placing a single mountain at the center, presenting landscapes closer to color plane abstraction. In the 1990s, he experimented with incorporating a folk and poetic sentiment into his color palette. Post-2000, his works featured a harmonious blend of empty spaces and seasonal colors, transforming the shape of mountains into objects of serene contemplation.

The Jeonbuk Provincial Museum of Art structured this exhibition not only to showcase Park Min-pyeong's individual works but also to illuminate his participation in group exhibitions and collaborative activities with local artists, aiming to broaden the scope of regional art history research.

Director Lee Ae-seon expressed, "This exhibition is an important research achievement that comprehensively showcases the flow of the regional art scene through the life of one artist," adding, "I hope this exhibition serves as an opportunity to reflect on the traces and significance left by the artist Park Min-pyeong in Jeonbuk art."
