서거석 전북교육감의 처남 A씨가 약 2주 전 극단적 선택으로 생을 마감한 사건이 전북 교육계에 큰 파장을 일으켰다. A씨는 서 교육감의 공직선거법 위반 재판과 관련해 위증 교사 혐의로 기소된 핵심 인물이었다.

경찰에 따르면, A씨는 전북 진안군 용담댐 인근 차량 내부에서 숨진 채 발견됐다. 그의 휴대전화에는 본인이 작성한 것으로 추정되는 메시지가 남아 있었으며, 타살 가능성은 배제된 것으로 알려졌다.

A씨는 서 교육감 재판에서 핵심 증인인 이귀재 전북대학교 교수에게 허위 진술을 유도했다는 혐의로 지난해 기소됐고, 혐의를 계속 부인하며 재판을 이어가던 중이었다. 재판을 앞두고 스스로 생을 마감한 이 사건은 지역 교육계에 충격을 안겼다.

그러나 이러한 비극적 사건에도 불구하고, 내년 전북교육감 선거를 둘러싼 입지자들의 움직임은 숨고를 틈도 없이 마이웨이로 이어지고 있다.

우석대학교 김윤태 교수를 핵심 발제자로 내세운 '전북교육포럼'은 지난 4월 22일 정읍 연지아트홀에서 대규모 포럼을 개최하며 존재감을 과시했다. 이 자리에는 전북교사노조와 전북교총 등이 조직적으로 참여했다. 또한 전주교육대학교 천호성 교수를 중심으로 한 '교육119 좌담회'도 4월 26일 전주교대 김서종홀에서 열렸으며, 전교조 전북지부와 전국공무원노조 전북교육청지부가 함께했다.

특히 전교조 전북지부의 행보가 주목된다. 현재 노병섭 전 전교조 지부장이 교육감 선거 출마를 준비 중임에도, 현 집행부는 천호성 교수 관련 행사에 힘을 실어주고 있다. 이는 현 집행부가 경기동부연합 계열 성향으로 분류되어 있고, 내부의 다양한 정치적 성향 간 화합이 쉽지 않기 때문이라는 분석이 나온다. 내부에서는 진영 논리로 인한 갈등이 심화되고 있다는 평가도 있다.

과거 김승환 전 교육감의 지지기반이었던 PD계열의 전교조 전북지부 과거 집행부는 참교육 실현과 학생 인권 신장도 중요하게 생각했다, 노병섭 전 전교조 지부장은 거리 현수막 등을 통해 독자적인 교육 이슈를 알리며 참교육 운동의 맥을 이어가고 있다.

서거석 교육감을 둘러싼 재판과 핵심 인물의 극단적 선택이라는 충격적인 상황에도 불구하고, 내년 교육감 선거를 향한 교육감 출마 예정자들의 경쟁은 계속되고 있다. 서거석 교육감도 처남 죽음을 수사기관 등, 남탓으로 돌리는 등의 언론대응과 교육감 비서실 직원의 의원면직과 관련한 무성한 소문들 그리고 혼란과 상처가 아물시간도 없이, 전북 교육계는 다시 선거 국면으로 빠르게 재편되고 있다.

About two weeks ago, Seo Geo-seok, Superintendent of Jeollabuk-do Office of Education, faced a major shock in the local education sector when his brother-in-law, Mr. A, died by suicide. Mr. A was a key figure indicted on charges of perjury instigation related to Seo’s violation of the Public Official Election Act.

According to police, Mr. A was found deceased inside a car near Yongdam Dam in Jin'an County. A message believed to be written by Mr. A was found on his mobile phone, and foul play has been ruled out.

Mr. A had been indicted last year for allegedly encouraging Professor Lee Gwi-jae of Jeonbuk National University, a crucial witness, to give false testimony at Seo’s trial. Mr. A had continuously denied the charges and was undergoing trial proceedings before his death. His sudden death just ahead of court proceedings sent shockwaves through the local education community.

Despite the gravity of this tragedy, prospective candidates for next year’s Jeonbuk Superintendent election continue to push forward without pause.

On April 22, the "Jeonbuk Education Forum," featuring Professor Kim Yun-tae of Woosuk University as its keynote speaker, held a major forum at Yeonji Art Hall in Jeongeup, with organized participation from the Jeonbuk Teachers' Union and Jeonbuk Teachers’ Association. Additionally, the "Education 119 Roundtable" led by Professor Cheon Ho-seong of Jeonju National University of Education was held on April 26 at the university's Kim Seo-Jong Hall, with support from the Jeonbuk branch of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTU) and the Public Officials Union of Jeonbuk Office of Education.

Particularly noteworthy is the current behavior of the KTU Jeonbuk branch. Despite former branch head Noh Byeong-seop preparing to run for the superintendent election, the current leadership, aligned with the Gyeonggi Eastern Coalition, is backing events associated with Professor Cheon. Analysts note that the internal divisions caused by differing political leanings have made reconciliation difficult within the union.

Previously, the KTU Jeonbuk branch’s former leadership, associated with the PD (Progressive Democratic) faction, had actively supported Superintendent Kim Seung-hwan's administration and emphasized realizing true education and enhancing student rights. Noh Byeong-seop continues to promote independent educational issues through banners and public campaigns, upholding the spirit of the true education movement.

Despite the shocking circumstances surrounding Superintendent Seo Geo-seok — including ongoing trials and the tragic death of a key figure — the race among candidates preparing to run in next year's superintendent election continues unabated. Seo himself has drawn criticism for his media responses, which have included shifting blame for his brother-in-law’s death onto investigative agencies, as well as rumors surrounding the voluntary resignation of a staff member from the superintendent’s office. Without even allowing time for the confusion and wounds to heal, the Jeonbuk education community is swiftly shifting back into election mode.
