서 교육감은 2022년 지방선거 과정에서 허위사실을 공표한 혐의(공직선거법 위반)로 기소됐으며, 원심에서 당선무료형인 벌금 500만원을 선고 받아 교육감직 당선을 무효로 하는 형이 선고된 상태다. 대법원이 이 판결을 확정할 경우, 서 교육감은 교육감직을 상실하게 된다.

The Supreme Court has scheduled the final ruling for Jeonbuk Superintendent of Education Seo Geo-seok, who was sentenced to forfeit his election in the appellate court, for 10:10 a.m. on May 15.
