(재)전주문화재단(대표이사 최락기)과 임실군이 조선시대 임실현의 사찬읍지 가운데 가장 오래된 『운수지 을묘본』을 전통한지로 복본(復本)하는 데 성공했다.

『운수지 을묘본』은 1675년 최초 편찬된 임실현 사찬읍지로, 당시 임실의 별칭이었던 ‘운수(雲水)’의 유래와 변천, 행정체계 등을 상세히 기록한 귀중한 고문헌이다.

전라도 사찬 지리서 가운데서는 1618년 순천 『승평지』에 이어 두 번째로 오래된 자료며, 1699년 남원 『용성지』 등과 더불어 17세기 전라도 지역 사찬읍지의 특징을 보여주는 학술적 가치가 높은 기록물로 평가된다.

임실군은 을묘본의 문화유산 지정 추진 과정에서 원본 보존과 활용을 위한 복본 제작을 결정하고, 이에 전주문화재단이 협력에 나섰다. 복본 작업에는 전북특별자치도 지정 무형유산 보유자이자 임실에 거주 중인 김일수 한지장이 참여해 전통한지 제작을 맡았다.

재단은 원본을 비파괴 방식으로 정밀 분석하고 이미지 스캔을 통해 디지털화한 뒤, 색상 보정과 판형 이미지 제작을 거쳐 복본을 완성했다. 특히 본문의 형태를 정비할 때는 고서의 판심제(版心題)를 기준으로 편집했으며, 황변 현상 등 원본 손상 요소를 제거해 최대한 유사한 형태로 복원했다. ※ 판심제(版心題) : 고서나 목판본에서 책장을 펼쳤을 때 안쪽 여백(판심)에 표기된 제목이나 권수. 현대의 페이지 번호와 유사한 기능을 함.

복본에는 김일수 한지장이 별도로 제작한 전통한지가 사용됐으며, 인쇄 기법 역시 전통 방식에 기반한 특화된 공법이 적용됐다. 표지와 장정은 현존 원본의 상태를 반영해 현상 복원 방식으로 선장(線裝)했다. ※ 선장(線裝) : 책장을 한 쪽에 뚫은 구멍에 실을 꿰매어 묶는 제본법

복본은 전주문화재단을 통해 임실군에 전달됐으며, 임실군은 향후 문화유산 지정과 지역 역사 자산 활용 계획에 이를 적극 반영할 예정이다.

최락기 전주문화재단 대표이사는 “이번 복본 작업은 단순한 문헌 재현을 넘어, 문화재 보존의 새로운 가능성을 제시한 시도”라며 “임실의 『운수지』를 시작으로 전주의 『완산지』, 남원의 『용성지』, 순천의 『승평지』 등 전라도 지역의 주요 사찬읍지도 순차적으로 복본해 나갈 예정”이라고 밝혔다.

한편, 복본된 『운수지 을묘본』은 오는 하반기 임실군에서 일반에 공개될 예정이다.

Jeonju Cultural Heritage Foundation (Representative Director Choi Rak-gi) and Imsil County have successfully reproduced the oldest copy of "Unsuji Eulmyobon" in the traditional way, located in Sachan-eup, Imsil-hyun during the Joseon Dynasty.

"Unsuji Eulmyobon" was first compiled in 1675 as a Sachan-eup record of Imsil-hyun, detailing the origin, changes, and administrative system of "Unsu" which was the alias of Imsil at that time, making it a valuable historical document.

Among the Sachan geographical records of Jeolla Province, it is the second oldest after "Seungpyeongji" in Suncheon in 1618, and is evaluated as a record of high academic value showing the characteristics of Sachan-eup in Jeolla Province in the 17th century, along with "Yongseongji" in Namwon in 1699.

In the process of designating the cultural heritage of Eulmyobon, Imsil County decided to make a reproduction for the preservation and utilization of the original, and the Jeonju Cultural Heritage Foundation cooperated in this endeavor. Kim Il-soo, a holder of intangible cultural heritage designated by Jeollabuk-do and residing in Imsil, participated in the traditional paper-making for the reproduction.

The foundation conducted a precise analysis of the original in a non-destructive manner, digitized it through image scanning, and completed the reproduction through color correction and plate image production. Especially when refining the text, they edited based on the "pansimje" (title on the inner margin of old books), and restored it as closely as possible by removing original damage factors like discoloration. (*Pansimje: A title or volume number indicated on the inner margin (pansim) when opening a book or woodblock print. It serves a similar function to modern page numbers.)

The reproduction used traditional paper separately made by Kim Il-soo, and the printing technique applied specialized methods based on traditional practices. The cover and binding were thread-bound in a restoration method reflecting the current state of the original. (*Thread-binding: A bookbinding method where threads are threaded through holes on one side of the book and tied.)

The reproduction was delivered to Imsil County through the Jeonju Cultural Heritage Foundation, and the county plans to actively incorporate it into future plans for the designation of cultural heritage and the utilization of local historical assets.

Choi Rak-gi, the representative director of the Jeonju Cultural Heritage Foundation, stated, "This reproduction work goes beyond a simple document reproduction, presenting a new possibility for cultural heritage preservation," and announced, "Starting with Imsil's 'Unsuji,' we plan to sequentially reproduce other major Sachan-eup records in Jeolla Province such as Jeonju's 'Wansanji,' Namwon's 'Yongseongji,' and Suncheon's 'Seungpyeongji.'"

Meanwhile, the reproduced "Unsuji Eulmyobon" is scheduled to be publicly available in Imsil County in the latter half of this year.
