전북대학교(총장 양오봉)가 국내 최초로 ‘첨단방위산업학과’를 신설해 2026학년도부터 학부생을 모집한다. 교육부는 최근 전북대가 제출한 학과 신설 계획을 승인했다.

신설되는 첨단방위산업학과는 20명 정원으로, 학부 수준에서 방위산업 전문 인재를 양성하는 국내 첫 사례다. 지금까지 일부 대학에서 석·박사 과정은 운영되어 왔으나, 학부과정 개설은 전북대가 처음이다.

이번 신설은 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁, 미중 패권 경쟁, 방위비 분담 이슈 등 급변하는 글로벌 안보 환경에 대응하고, K-방산 수출 확대에 필요한 전문 인력 양성을 목표로 한다. 실제로 우리나라 방산 수출은 최근 5년간 500억 달러를 돌파하며 반도체, 자동차 등과 함께 국가 주력 산업으로 부상하고 있다.

전북대는 그간 새만금을 K-방위산업 전진기지로 육성하기 위한 산학협력과 인재 양성에 힘써왔으며, 지난해에는 국내 최초로 방위산업융합전공도 설립했다. 이 전공에는 10여 개 공학·이공계 학과가 참여해 교차 교육과 실습을 운영 중이다.

첨단방위산업학과는 AI, 로봇, 반도체 등 신기술을 기반으로 공학뿐 아니라 인문·사회, 외국어 등 다양한 분야와 연계한 융합형 교육과정을 운영할 계획이다. 방위산업연구소 및 첨단방산융합 대학원과의 협력도 확대된다.

양오봉 총장은 “첨단방위산업학과를 통해 전북대가 K-방산 전문인력 양성의 중심 대학으로 자리매김하겠다”며 “국가 경쟁력 강화와 지역 산업 발전에 기여하는 인재 양성에 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.

Chonbuk National University (President Yang O-bong) will recruit undergraduate students for the newly established 'Advanced Defense Industry Department' starting from the 2026 academic year, becoming the first university in Korea to do so. The Ministry of Education recently approved the department establishment plan submitted by Chonbuk University.

The newly established Advanced Defense Industry Department will have a capacity of 20 students and is the first case in Korea to train defense industry professionals at the undergraduate level. While some universities have operated master's and doctoral programs in the field, this is the first time Chonbuk University is opening an undergraduate program.

This establishment aims to respond to the rapidly changing global security environment, including the Russia-Ukraine war, the US-China power competition, defense cost-sharing issues, and to cultivate specialized personnel needed for the expansion of K-defense exports. In fact, Korea's defense exports have surpassed $50 billion in the last five years, emerging as a national key industry alongside semiconductors and automobiles.

Chonbuk University has been making efforts to foster industry-academia cooperation and nurture talent for K-defense industry advancement in the Saemangeum area. Last year, it established the first defense industry convergence major in Korea, involving participation from around 10 engineering and science departments for cross-disciplinary education and practical training.

The Advanced Defense Industry Department plans to operate a convergent education program that links various fields such as engineering, humanities, social sciences, and foreign languages based on advanced technologies like AI, robotics, and semiconductors. Collaboration with defense industry research institutes and the Advanced Defense Industry Convergence Graduate School will also be expanded.

President Yang O-bong stated, "Through the Advanced Defense Industry Department, Chonbuk University will establish itself as a leading university in training K-defense industry professionals," and added, "We will do our best to cultivate talent that contributes to enhancing national competitiveness and regional industrial development."
