전북대학교 농축산식품융합학과 정경훈 석사과정생(지도교수 김소라)이 ‘2024 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회’에서 동아시아 고유종인 전갈붙이(Allochthonius)의 진화사를 규명한 연구로 최우수구두발표상을 수상했다.

정 학생은 ‘A phylogeography of Allochthonius’라는 주제로, 한국·중국·일본 등 동아시아 지역에 분포하는 전갈붙이의 계통지리 분석을 통해 진화적 기원과 분화 경로를 밝혀냈다. 연구는 중국 허베이대학과의 국제 협력을 통해 이뤄졌으며, 과거 동아시아 전역에 분포하던 전갈붙이가 기후 변화와 지질 변동으로 피난처(refugia) 중심의 분포 양상을 보이게 됐음을 입증했다.

특히 한반도를 기점으로 한 섬 지역으로의 확산과 더불어, 세계적으로 드문 ‘해양 횡단 분산’ 사례가 확인돼 진화생물학적으로 큰 의미를 지닌다는 평가를 받았다.

정 학생은 “동아시아 생물지리와 진화역사를 통합적으로 조명한 의미 있는 연구”라며 지도교수와 협력 연구진에게 감사를 전했다.

한편, 한국응용곤충학회는 곤충학 분야의 학술·산업적 발전을 위한 대표 학회로, 매년 우수 연구를 선정해 시상하고 있다.

Jeong Gyeong-hoon, a master's student in the Department of Agricultural and Livestock Products Convergence at Jeonbuk University (supervised by Professor Kim Sora), won the Best Oral Presentation Award at the '2024 Korean Society of Applied Entomology Conference' for his research on the evolution history of the East Asian endemic species, Allochthonius.

Under the topic 'A phylogeography of Allochthonius,' Jeong conducted a phylogeographic analysis of Allochthonius species distributed in East Asia, including Korea, China, and Japan, to elucidate their evolutionary origins and divergence paths. The research, conducted through international collaboration with Hebei University in China, demonstrated that Allochthonius, which was previously distributed throughout East Asia, exhibited a distribution pattern centered around refugia due to climate change and geological shifts.

In particular, the spread to island regions from the Korean Peninsula and the rare case of 'marine transoceanic dispersal' confirmed globally were evaluated to have significant evolutionary biological implications.

Jeong expressed gratitude to his supervising professor and collaborative research team, describing the study as "a significant research that integrates East Asian biogeography and evolutionary history."
