전주 예수병원과 신흥학교, 기전학교, 선교사 묘역 등 기독교 선교 유산에 대한 유네스코 세계유산 등재가 추진된다.

전주시를 포함한 8개 지방자치단체는 20일 광주 양림동 오웬기념각에서 ‘선교기지 세계유산 등재 지방정부협의회’ 출범식을 열고, 아시아 최초의 기독교 선교 유산 세계유산 등재를 공동 추진하기로 했다.

협의회는 각 지역에 분포한 선교기지가 조성 당시 원형을 잘 보존하고 있어 세계유산 등재 요건인 진정성과 완전성을 갖췄다고 보고, 올해 말까지 연구용역을 완료한 뒤 국제 학술대회 등 본격 활동에 나설 계획이다.

전주의 선교기지는 1895년 미국 남장로교 선교사들에 의해 조성된 호남 최초의 기독교 선교기지로, 예수병원과 간호학교, 선교사 사택 및 묘역, 신흥학교, 기전학교 등 15개의 문화유산이 남아 있다.

전주시는 이들 유산이 천년 고도 전주의 역사성을 근대기로 확장해 보여주는 중요한 자산이며, 자연경관과 어우러진 보존‧활용 가치가 높다고 평가하고 있다.

우범기 전주시장은 “전주시도 적극적으로 참여해 세계유산 등재라는 결실을 맺을 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.

On the 20th, eight local governments including Jeonju City held the inauguration ceremony of the "Local Government Consultative Council for the Registration of Missionary Sites as World Heritage" at the Owen Memorial Hall in Yangrim-dong, Gwangju, and agreed to jointly promote the registration of Asia's first Christian missionary heritage as a World Heritage Site.

The council believes that the missionary sites in each region have well-preserved original forms from their establishment, meeting the authenticity and integrity criteria for World Heritage registration. They plan to complete research tasks by the end of this year and then engage in full-scale activities such as international academic conferences.

The missionary site in Jeonju, established by American Presbyterian missionaries in 1895, is the first Christian missionary site in Honam region. It includes 15 cultural heritages such as Jeonju Jesus Hospital, nursing school, missionary residences and cemetery, Sinheung School, and Gijeon School.

Jeonju City considers these heritages as important assets that demonstrate the historical significance of Jeonju from ancient times to modern era, with high preservation and utilization value harmonized with natural landscapes.

Jeonju Mayor Woo Bum-gi stated, "Jeonju City will actively participate to achieve the fruit of World Heritage registration."
