전주시 완산구 노송동에 위치한 종광대 토성이 전북특별자치도 문화유산(기념물)으로 지정됐다. 전주시는 20일, 전라북도 문화유산위원회 심의를 거쳐 종광대 토성의 문화재 지정을 고시했다고 밝혔다.

종광대 토성은 후백제 시대 전주 북쪽 지역 방어를 위해 축조된 것으로, 1530년 편찬된 『신증동국여지승람』을 비롯해 『여지도서』, 『대동지지』, 『완산지』 등 고문헌에 기록이 남아 있다. 특히 2008년 주택 재개발 과정에서 유적이 처음 확인됐고, 이후 발굴조사를 통해 후백제 도성임이 밝혀졌다.

성곽은 반태산의 지형을 활용해 방어가 취약한 지역에 기와와 점토 등을 사용한 독특한 축조 방식으로 만들어졌으며, 이는 통일신라 시대 석성 기술을 토성에 적용한 드문 사례로 평가된다. 또 발굴 과정에서 후백제 양식의 기와 다수가 출토돼 문화사적 가치도 높게 나타났다.

시는 문화유산 지정을 계기로 종광대 토성의 보존과 정비를 위한 종합계획을 수립하고, 추가 발굴과 복원사업을 추진할 방침이다.

노은영 전주시 문화체육관광국장은 “종광대 토성은 후백제 왕도의 상징이자 전주의 소중한 유산”이라며 “지속적인 조사와 정비를 통해 역사적 가치를 널리 알릴 수 있도록 하겠다”고 말했다.

Jonggwangdae Toseong, located in Nosong-dong, Wansan-gu, Jeonju City, has been designated as a cultural heritage site (monument) of Jeollabuk-do Special Self-Governing Province. Jeonju City announced on the 20th that it had issued a notice designating Jonggwangdae Toseong as a cultural property after deliberation by the Jeollabuk-do Cultural Heritage Committee.

Jonggwangdae Toseong was built during the Later Baekje period for defense in the northern area of Jeonju. It is recorded in historical documents such as the 1530 compilation of "Sinjungdonggukyeojiseungram," as well as "Yeojidoseo," "Daedongjiji," and "Wansanji." Particularly, the ruins were first discovered during a housing redevelopment process in 2008, and subsequent excavations revealed that it was the fortress of Later Baekje.

The fortress was constructed using a unique method of using tiles and clay in a vulnerable defense area utilizing the topography of Bantae Mountain. This is evaluated as a rare case of applying the fortress construction technique of the Unified Silla period to a toseong. Additionally, during the excavation process, a large number of tiles in the Later Baekje style were unearthed, showing high cultural value.

The city plans to establish a comprehensive plan for the preservation and restoration of Jonggwangdae Toseong and to promote additional excavation and restoration projects following the designation as a cultural heritage site.

No Eun-young, Director of the Culture, Sports, and Tourism Department of Jeonju City, stated, "Jonggwangdae Toseong is a symbol of the Later Baekje royal capital and a precious heritage of Jeonju," adding, "Through continuous research and maintenance, we will strive to widely promote its historical value."
