EBS 대표 교양 다큐멘터리 프로그램 <지식채널e>가 방송 20주년을 맞아 특별 기획 4부작 시리즈 ‘작가의 상상은 과학이 된다’를 오는 9월 8일부터 11일까지 매일 밤 25시(EBS 1TV)를 통해 선보인다.

이번 시리즈는 SF 작가 천선란이 로봇공학자 한재권 교수, 생물학자 안주현 박사와 함께 과학과 상상의 경계를 넘나드는 주제를 탐구하며, ‘AI’, ‘로봇’, ‘좀비’, ‘공룡’ 등 대중적으로 친숙한 소재를 과학적 시각에서 새롭게 조명한다.

천선란 작가는 대표작 『천 개의 파랑』으로 한국 SF 문학의 새로운 흐름을 이끌었으며, 해당 작품은 최근 워너브라더스와 영화화 계약을 체결해 한국 문학 최초의 할리우드 진출 사례로 주목받고 있다. 또 다른 작품 『밤에 찾아오는 구원자』는 ‘해리포터’ 출판사로 유명한 블룸스버리를 통해 해외에 소개되며, K-장르문학의 저변을 확장하고 있다.

4부작 시리즈의 첫 번째 편은 ‘AI와 사랑에 빠질 수 있을까?’를 주제로, 인간과 인공지능 간의 감정적 관계 가능성을 탐구한다. 두 번째 편에서는 ‘로봇은 왜 사람처럼 만들까?’라는 질문을 통해 인간형 로봇 개발의 기술적·철학적 배경을 조명한다. 이어 세 번째 편 ‘좀비는 그저 상상일 뿐일까?’에서는 SF 영화 속 좀비를 생물학적 시각에서 해석하며, 팬데믹과 뇌 기능의 문제 등 현실적 위협에 대해 다룬다. 마지막 네 번째 편은 ‘공룡은 다시 살아날 수 있을까?’를 통해 고대 DNA 복원 기술과 멸종 생물 부활의 과학적 가능성을 살핀다.

이번 방송은 SF 작가의 상상력과 과학자의 지식을 교차시키며, 첨단 기술 시대를 살아가는 현대인에게 상상력과 현실 사이의 간극을 흥미롭게 전달할 예정이다. 제작진은 “과학과 문학의 만남을 통해 교양 다큐멘터리의 새로운 가능성을 모색하고자 했다”며 “이번 시리즈가 시청자들에게 과학의 본질과 미래에 대한 깊은 질문을 던지는 계기가 되길 바란다”고 전했다.

In this series, SF writer Cheon Seon-ran will explore the boundaries between science and imagination with robotic engineer Professor Han Jae-kwon and biologist Dr. Ahn Ju-hyun, shedding new light on popular themes such as 'AI,' 'robots,' 'zombies,' and 'dinosaurs' from a scientific perspective.

Writer Cheon Seon-ran led a new wave in Korean SF literature with her representative work "A Thousand Blues," which has recently garnered attention as the first case of Korean literature entering Hollywood through a contract with Warner Bros. Another work, "The Savior Who Comes at Night," is being introduced overseas through Bloomsbury, known for publishing 'Harry Potter,' expanding the reach of K-genre literature.

The first episode of the 4-part series will explore the theme "Can AI Fall in Love?" investigating the possibility of emotional relationships between humans and artificial intelligence. The second episode will shed light on the technical and philosophical background of developing humanoid robots through the question "Why are robots made to resemble humans?" The third episode, "Are zombies just a figment of imagination?" interprets zombies from a biological perspective seen in SF movies, addressing realistic threats such as pandemics and brain function issues. The final fourth episode, "Can dinosaurs come back to life?" examines the scientific possibility of ancient DNA restoration technology and the revival of extinct organisms.

This broadcast aims to intriguingly bridge the gap between imagination and reality for modern individuals living in the era of advanced technology by intersecting the imaginative power of SF writers with the knowledge of scientists.
