국립새만금간척박물관(관장 김항술)은 오는 21일부터 기획전 ‘뉴욕! 물 위에 쌓은 꿈의 도시’를 선보인다. 이번 전시는 2026년 5월 31일까지 이어지며, 간척과 이민의 두 축을 중심으로 뉴욕의 역사를 조명한다.

전시는 19세기 후반부터 20세기 초까지 미국 이민의 관문이었던 엘리스섬의 이야기로 시작된다. 그 위에 마천루와 국제항만은 뉴욕을 세계의 자본과 문화가 교차하는 중심지로 만들었다.

이와 관련하여 엘리스섬의 입국 심사 과정과 아일랜드 출신 17세 소녀 애니 무어(Annie Moore)의 입국 기록, 간척 공사 현장에 투입된 이민 노동자들의 모습, 뉴욕 항만의 확장과 마천루의 건설 과정을 보여주는 지도와 사진 등이 다양하게 전시된다. 이를 통해 ‘간척과 이민’이 오늘날 뉴욕의 성장에 있어 중요한 동력이었음을 확인할 수 있다.

The National Saemangeum Reclamation Museum (Director Kim Hang-sul) will showcase the exhibition "New York! City of Dreams Built on Water" starting from the 21st. This exhibition will continue until May 31, 2026, focusing on New York's history through the themes of reclamation and immigration.

The exhibition begins with the story of Ellis Island, which served as the gateway for American immigration from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The skyscrapers and international harbor built on it transformed New York into a hub where the world's capital and culture intersect.

In relation to this, various displays will showcase the immigration inspection process at Ellis Island, the immigration record of 17-year-old Annie Moore from Ireland, the laborers involved in the reclamation work, and maps and photos depicting the expansion of the New York Harbor and the construction of skyscrapers. Through these exhibits, it can be confirmed that "reclamation and immigration" have been important driving forces in the growth of modern-day New York.
