(재)전주문화재단(대표이사 최락기)은 세계에서 유일하게 여성들만을 위해 만들어진 비밀문자 ‘여서(女書)’를 주제로 전통한지 예술교육을 오는 12월 10일에 개최한다.

‘여서’는 중국의 한 지역에서 가부장적 제약으로 글을 배우지 못했던 여성들이 서로의 삶과 감정을 나누기 위해 만든 독창적 문자다. 옷감에 수를 놓거나 자수 문양으로 새겨 활용한 이 문자는, 제한된 환경 속에서도 여성들이 ‘자신만의 언어’로 애환과 기쁨, 연대의 이야기를 이어온 소통 방식이었다.

이번 교육은 여서가 지닌 시각적 특징과 서사를 전통한지 예술 창작으로 확장하는 데에 초점을 맞춘다. 한지는 섬유 결이 살아 있어 바느질이 가능하고, 안료의 자연스러운 스밈과 층을 쌓거나 구기는 등 다양한 조형 표현이 가능해 예술적 잠재력이 매우 높다. 참가자들은 바느질·채색·스케치 등 다양한 기법을 활용해 여서 문자의 정서를 자신만의 메시지로 재창작하는 시간을 갖게 된다.

최락기 전주문화재단 대표이사는 “한지는 고유한 조형성과 감수성을 지닌 재료”라며 “이번 교육을 통해 여서의 문화적 의미와 한지의 물성이 만나, 참가자들이 자신만의 창작 세계를 확장될 것으로 기대한다”고 전했다.

The Jeonju Cultural Heritage Foundation (Representative Director Choi Rak-gi) will host a traditional art education event on December 10th with the theme of the secret code "Yeo-seo (女書)," which is exclusively created for women in the world.

"Yeo-seo" is an original script created by women in a region of China who were unable to learn writing due to patriarchal constraints, in order to share their lives and emotions. This unique script, which was utilized by embroidering on fabrics or incorporating into embroidery patterns, served as a means of communication where women in restricted environments could convey their sorrows, joys, and stories of solidarity in their "own language."

This education event will focus on expanding the visual characteristics and narratives of Yeo-seo through traditional art creation. Hanji, a type of traditional Korean paper, has a high artistic potential due to its living fiber structure that allows for sewing, natural blending of dyes, layering or twisting, and various sculptural expressions. Participants will have the opportunity to reinterpret the emotional essence of the Yeo-seo script into their own messages through techniques such as sewing, coloring, and sketching.

Choi Rak-gi, the Representative Director of the Jeonju Cultural Heritage Foundation, stated, "Hanji is a material with unique plasticity and sensitivity," and expressed expectations that through this education event, the cultural significance of Yeo-seo and the properties of Hanji will converge, allowing participants to expand their own creative worlds.
