전북현대가 제10대 사령탑으로 정정용 감독(56)을 선임했다.

전북현대는 2025시즌 거스 포옛 감독과 함께 팀의 체질 개선을 완수하며 재건의 기틀을 마련했다.

정정용 감독은 한국 축구계의 대표적인 ‘학구파’이자 ‘성장형 지도자’로 손꼽힌다.

그는 선수 시절의 화려함보다 지도자로서의 역량을 쌓는 데 집중하며 스포츠 생리학 박사 학위를 취득하는 등 끊임없이 학습하는 자세를 견지해 왔다.

그의 지도력은 이미 성인 무대와 연령별 대표팀에서 충분히 검증됐다.

2019년 U-20 월드컵에서 대한민국 축구 역사상 첫 FIFA 주관대회 결승 진출(준우승)이라는 금자탑을 쌓았으며, 이후 K리그2 김천상무의 우승(2023)과 승격을 이끌었다.

특히 김천상무 역사상 최초로 K리그1에서 2시즌 연속 파이널 A(2024~2025)에 진출시키는 등 탁월한 전술 운용 능력을 증명했다.

정정용 감독의 또 다른 강점은 ‘부드러운 카리스마’를 바탕으로 한 커뮤니케이션 능력이다.

김천상무에서 정정용 감독과 함께 팀을 이끌었던 성한수 공격 코치를 비롯해 이문선 수비코치, 심정현 피지컬 코치와 전북현대 선수 출신인 서동명 GK 코치가 팀에 합류한다.

황희훈 GK 코치는 N팀으로 자리를 옮겨 N팀과 유스팀 전 연령대 골키퍼 지도를 아우르는 ‘총괄 GK 코치’로 영역을 확대하고 정조국 코치는 새로운 도전을 위해 팀과 아쉬운 작별을 고했다.

정정용 신임 감독은 "K리그 최고의 명문 구단인 전북현대의 지휘봉을 잡게 되어 영광이며 무거운 책임감을 느낀다"며 "거스 포옛 감독이 닦아놓은 기반 위에 나만의 디테일을 더해, 팬들이 자부심을 느낄 수 있는 축구를 선보이겠다"고 포부를 밝혔다.

한편, 선임 절차를 마친 정정용 감독은 2026시즌을 위해 오는 1월 11일 스페인으로 전지훈련을 떠날 예정이다.

Continuing this trend of change, the club has designated Jung Jung-yong as the ideal candidate to complete the 2026 season as the inaugural year of the 'Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC Innovation and Growth 2.0 Era.'

If the 2025 season under coach Gers Poyet was a starting point for change, the 2026 season is expected to be a time to settle the system built with coach Jung Jung-yong and add tactical details, the club stated.

The club emphasized that for greater innovation and growth, there are still details that need to be addressed, and Jung Jung-yong, with his solid theory and rich field experience, is the optimal person to fill in the gaps in Jeonbuk Hyundai and elevate the team to a higher level.

Coach Jung Jung-yong is considered a leading figure in the Korean football community as a 'scholarly coach' and a 'growth-oriented leader.'

He has focused on building his coaching capabilities rather than the glamour of his playing days, constantly learning, even obtaining a doctorate in sports physiology.

His coaching prowess has already been validated on the adult stage and with national youth teams.

In 2019, he led South Korea to the first FIFA-sanctioned final in the country's football history at the U-20 World Cup (runner-up), followed by guiding K League 2's Gimcheon Sangmu to victory (2023) and promotion.

Especially noteworthy is his outstanding tactical acumen, leading Gimcheon Sangmu to consecutive Final A appearances in K League 1 for the first time in the club's history (2024-2025).

Another strength of Coach Jung Jung-yong is his communication skills based on 'gentle charisma.'

His experience coaching players of all ages, from youth to adults, has fostered deep rapport with the team, aligning well with Jeonbuk Hyundai's pursuit of the 'One Team' spirit.

Furthermore, his experience coaching various national youth teams is expected to refine Jeonbuk Hyundai's player development process.

The club believes that Coach Jung Jung-yong will systematize player discovery and development, securing the team's long-term competitiveness.

Jeonbuk Hyundai will also revamp its coaching staff with the appointment of Coach Jung Jung-yong.

Joining Coach Jung Jung-yong, who led the team at Gimcheon Sangmu, will be Seong Han-soo as attacking coach, Lee Moon-seon as defensive coach, Shim Jung-hyun as physical coach, and former Jeonbuk Hyundai player Seo Dong-myung as goalkeeper coach.

Hwang Hee-hoon, the goalkeeper coach, will move to the N team to oversee goalkeeping coaching for all age groups, expanding his role as the 'chief goalkeeper coach,' while Jung Jo-guk, the coach, bid farewell to the team for a new challenge.

Newly appointed Coach Jung Jung-yong expressed his honor and the weight of responsibility in taking the helm of Jeonbuk Hyundai, stating that he will add his own details on the foundation laid by Coach Gers Poyet to showcase football that fans can be proud of.

Having completed the appointment process, Coach Jung Jung-yong is scheduled to depart for Spain on January 11 for a pre-season training camp for the 2026 season.
