붉은가슴기러기(Red-breasted Goose)는 오리과 기러기류(세계16종, 한국12종 : 붉은가슴기러기, 흑기러기, 캐나다기러기, 흰기러기. 흰머리기러기, 줄기러기, 개리, 회색기러기, 쇠기러기, 흰이마기러기, 큰기러기, 큰부리큰기러기)로 크기는 57cm로 소형 기러기다. 가슴과 목의 옆 부분은 뚜렷한 적갈색이며, 흰색과 검은색 무늬가 특징이다. 세계자연보존연맹(IUCN) 취약종((VU)으로 국제보호조다.
북서시베리아에서 번식하고 유라시아의 흑해, 카스피해, 아랄해 연안에서 월동을 한다. 서식지는 하천, 저수지, 농경지, 초지 등으로 다른 기러기류에 섞여 활동을 한다.
우리나라에는 겨울철새로 오던 것이 아니고 길잃은새(迷鳥)로 2012년 10월에 충청남도 천수만 간월호에서 1개체가 처음 관찰되었다. 2021년 10월에 충청남도 서산시 천수만에서 1개체, 2023년 10월 천수만에서 1개체가 관찰된 이래 2025년 3월 군산시 새만금에서는 처음으로 1개체가 관찰되었다.

The Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis) is a small-sized goose, measuring about 57 cm in length. It belongs to the Anatidae family, which includes 16 species of geese worldwide, 12 of which have been recorded in Korea. These include the red-breasted goose, brant goose, Canada goose, snow goose, emperor goose, lesser white-fronted goose, barnacle goose, greylag goose, bean goose, greater white-fronted goose, and tundra bean goose. The red-breasted goose is characterized by its distinct reddish-brown coloration on the sides of its breast and neck, along with prominent black and white markings. It is classified as Vulnerable (VU) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), making it a globally protected species. This goose breeds in northwestern Siberia and winters along the coasts of the Black Sea, Caspian Sea, and Aral Sea. Its habitat includes rivers, reservoirs, farmlands, and grasslands, often seen mingling with other species of geese. In Korea, it is not a regular winter visitor but rather considered a vagrant bird. The first recorded sighting in the country was in October 2012, when a single individual was observed at Ganwol Lake in Cheonsu Bay, Chungcheongnam-do. Since then, one individual was observed in October 2021 in Cheonsu Bay, Seosan City, and another in October 2023. Most recently, in March 2025, a single individual was observed for the first time in Saemangeum, Gunsan City, marking its debut appearance at this location after two years.
