전북특별자치도립미술관(관장 이애선, 이하 ‘도립미술관’)은 본관과 서울분관에서 동시에 신소장품전 ‘연구과제’ 전시를 개최했다고 밝혔다.

도립미술관은 소장품 운영에 공개와 공유를 최우선으로 여기고 있다. 극소수의 소장품을 영구 보존을 위해 대여와 전시를 제한하는 일반적 관행과 달리 전북도립미술관은 도민들의 향유 기회를 확장하는 정책을 펼치고 있다. 이에 따라 전체 소장품의 25%가 넘는 작품들을 전북 지역 공립미술관과 공유하고 있다.

도립미술관은 7년간 수집한 소장품을 신소장품전 ‘연구과제’ 에서 공개한다. 1, 2층 로비와 세미나실 등 전시 공간의 정비와 지역 작가들의 소장품 공개 요구와도 맞물려있다. 이번 전시를 통해 소장품 수집 방향을 공개하여 공공기관으로써 투명성을 강화하고, 소장품 연구가 도립미술관의 중요한 과업임을 소개하고자 한다.

본관에서는 2018년부터 2024년까지 수집된 484점 중 120여 점을 코로나 기점으로 3개의 시기로 분류하여 소개한다. 첫 번째 섹션인 1, 2 전시실에서는 2018년부터 2019년까지, 코로나 이전에 수집된 86점 중 40여 점을 전시한다. 두 번째 섹션인 자료열람실과 3, 4전시실에서는 2020년부터 2022년까지, 코로나 시국에 수증된 329점 중 40여점으로 구성된다. 마지막 섹션인 5전시실에서는 2023년부터 2024년까지 수증된 69점 중 40여 점을 선보인다. 특히 이번 전시에서는 도립미술관 전체 소장품 현황과 소장품 추천위원회의 명단을 밝혀 화제가 되고 있다.

본관의 각 층 로비와 제 1전시실에서는 서예, 설치, 공예 등 넓은 시기와 다양한 연령대의 작품이 전시된다. 2전시실에서는 전북의 작고, 원로 작가들의 작품뿐 아니라 매년 열렸던 아시아 미술전을 통해 동남아시아 주요 작가의 작품이 소개된다. 자료열람실에서는 2021년 기증받은 한운성의 초기 작품이 전시된다. 3전시실에서는 2020년부터 2022년까지 장르 간 균형을 위해 집중적으로 구입한 사진들과 특별전을 통해서 수증한 한지 작품들을 선보인다. 4전시실에서는 전북청년, 작가창작공간과 같은 전북의 청년작가 지원프로그램을 통해 수증된 작품들과 군산아트페어, 아트전북페스타 등을 통해 구입된 작품들을 확인할 수 있다. 5전시실에서는 소장품 공모와 전북미술사 연구를 위해 수집된 작품들을 전시한다.

서울분관에서는 대아스페이스 기획전시와 전북미술사 연구전, 2023년 재개된 공모를 통해 수집된 작품들을 중심으로 20여점이 전시되고 있다. 이렇듯 도립미술관은 소장품을 ‘공통의 사용’으로 되돌리고자 노력하고 있다.

한편 신소장품전 ‘연구과제’는 개막 이후 본관은 4월 13일까지, 서울관은 4월 27일까지 사전예약 없이 전시를 관람할 수 있다. 이애선 관장은 “이번 전시를 통해 도립미술관의 소장품 수집 방향을 공개해 공공기관의 투명성을 강화하고, 미술관을 연구기관으로 인식하는 계기를 마련하고자 한다”고 말했다.

The Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province Art Museum (Director Lee Ae-sun, hereinafter referred to as the 'Provincial Art Museum') announced that it held a simultaneous exhibition of new acquisitions titled 'Research Project' at its main building and Seoul branch.

The Provincial Art Museum prioritizes openness and sharing in the operation of its collections. Unlike the common practice of restricting loans and exhibitions for the permanent preservation of a very small number of collection items, the Jeonbuk Provincial Art Museum is expanding opportunities for local residents to enjoy the collections. As a result, more than 25% of the entire collection is shared with public art museums in the Jeonbuk region.

The Provincial Art Museum is unveiling its collection acquired over seven years in the exhibition 'Research Project.' This initiative aligns with the maintenance of exhibition spaces such as the 1st and 2nd-floor lobbies and seminar rooms, as well as demands from local artists for the public disclosure of collection items. Through this exhibition, the museum aims to enhance transparency as a public institution by revealing the direction of its collection efforts and emphasizing that collection research is a crucial task of the Provincial Art Museum.

At the main building, a total of 484 items collected from 2018 to 2024 are classified into three periods based on the COVID-19 outbreak, with around 120 items being showcased. The first section in the 1st and 2nd exhibition rooms displays around 40 items out of the 86 collected before the pandemic in 2018 and 2019. The second section in the reference room and 3rd and 4th exhibition rooms features about 40 items out of the 329 collected during the pandemic period from 2020 to 2022. The final section in the 5th exhibition room presents around 40 items out of the 69 collected from 2023 to 2024. This exhibition has garnered attention for disclosing the current status of the museum's entire collection and the list of the Collection Recommendation Committee.

Various works from a wide range of periods and age groups, including calligraphy, installations, and crafts, are displayed in the lobbies of each floor and the 1st exhibition room at the main building. The 2nd exhibition room showcases works by local and senior artists from Jeonbuk, as well as pieces by major artists from Southeast Asia featured in the annual Asia Art Fair. The reference room displays early works by Han Woon-sung donated in 2021. The 3rd exhibition room focuses on photographs purchased for genre balance from 2020 to 2022 and Hanji works acquired through special exhibitions. The 4th exhibition room presents works obtained through programs supporting young artists in Jeonbuk, such as the Jeonbuk Youth Artist Studio, as well as pieces purchased at the Gunsan Art Fair and Art Jeonbuk Festival. The 5th exhibition room showcases works collected for the collection call and research on Jeonbuk art history.

At the Seoul branch, around 20 items are on display, focusing on works collected through the 2023 reopened call for submissions, as well as curated exhibitions and research on Jeonbuk art history. The Provincial Art Museum is making efforts to return its collection to 'common use.'

The exhibition 'Research Project' will be open for viewing until April 13 at the main building and until April 27 at the Seoul branch without prior reservation. Director Lee Ae-sun stated, "Through this exhibition, we aim to disclose the direction of the Provincial Art Museum's collection efforts, enhance transparency as a public institution, and establish the perception of the museum as a research institution."
