정읍시는 25일 동학농민혁명기념재단, 동학농민혁명연구소와 함께 ‘동학농민혁명 참여자의 지역별 활동과 성격’을 주제로 학술대회를 개최했다. 동학농민혁명교육관에서 열린 이번 행사에는 이학수 시장, 신순철 기념재단 이사장, 유족, 연구자 등 120여 명이 참석했다.

학술대회는 여섯 가지 주제발표를 통해 전국 각지에서 일어난 동학농민군의 활동을 집중 조명하고, 참여자 등록의 한계와 지역별 봉기의 특성, 명예회복 필요성 등을 다각도로 논의했다.

이병규 재단 부장은 참여자 등록의 법적 한계를 지적하며 제도 개선을 강조했고, 박정민 전북대 교수는 정읍과 고부를 중심으로 한 전북지역의 비중을 통계적으로 분석했다. 김희태 전 위원은 전남 장흥·강진 사례를, 김양식 소장은 충청 내포 지역의 봉기 양상을 조명했다. 이어 신진희 강사는 경상도에서의 자발적 저항 사례를, 조재곤 서강대 교수는 동학군 북상 이후 경기·강원·황해 지역의 확산 양상을 다뤘다.

참석자들은 동학농민혁명이 전국적 연대와 지역 특수성이 결합된 민중운동이라는 점에 공감하며, 참여자 기록화와 명예회복의 체계적 추진이 필요하다는 데 의견을 모았다.

이학수 시장은 “정읍은 동학농민혁명의 발상지이자 민중 연대의 중심”이라며 “이번 학술대회를 계기로 정체성을 확립하고 시민과 유족이 함께하는 기념사업으로 발전시키겠다”고 밝혔다.

시는 이번 발표 내용을 단행본으로 발간하고, 이를 토대로 교육 프로그램과 콘텐츠 개발을 이어갈 계획이다.

Jeongeup City held an academic conference on the theme of "Regional Activities and Characteristics of Participants in the Donghak Peasant Revolution" in collaboration with the Donghak Peasant Revolution Foundation and the Donghak Peasant Revolution Research Institute on the 25th. The event took place at the Donghak Peasant Revolution Education Center and was attended by around 120 people, including Mayor Lee Hak-soo, Chairman Shin Sun-cheol of the memorial foundation, relatives, and researchers.

The conference focused on the activities of Donghak peasant armies that occurred nationwide through six thematic presentations, discussing the limitations of participant registration, the characteristics of regional uprisings, and the necessity of honor restoration from various perspectives.

Director Lee Byung-gyu pointed out the legal limitations of participant registration and emphasized the need for institutional improvements, while Professor Park Jung-min statistically analyzed the significance of Jeongeup and Gobu in the Jeonbuk region. Former council member Kim Hee-tae shed light on the cases of Jangheung and Gangjin in Jeonnam, and Director Kim Yang-sik highlighted the uprising patterns in the Naebo region of Chungcheong. Furthermore, Instructor Shin Jin-hee discussed voluntary resistance cases in Gyeongsang Province, and Professor Cho Jae-gon examined the spread patterns in Gyeonggi, Gangwon, and Hwanghae regions following the northward movement of the Donghak army.

Participants empathized with the fact that the Donghak Peasant Revolution was a nationwide popular movement combining solidarity and regional uniqueness, and agreed on the need for systematic participant documentation and honor restoration.

Mayor Lee Hak-soo stated, "Jeongeup is the birthplace of the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the center of popular solidarity," adding, "I will establish our identity through this academic conference and further develop it into a commemorative project involving citizens and relatives."

The city plans to publish the contents of the presentations as a monograph and continue with educational program and content development based on it.
