우진문화공간 갤러리는 7월 3일부터 16일까지 조각가 한강의 개인전 ‘소화받지 못한 자들’을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 사회가 설정해온 이상적인 신체 기준과, 그에 도달하지 못했거나 이를 거부한 몸들에 대한 질문에서 출발한다.

한강 작가는 ‘100g의 닭가슴살, 불규칙한 단식, 식사 대신 커피 한 잔’처럼 몸을 관리하는 방식이 효율이라는 이름 아래 신체를 조율 가능한 대상으로 전락시킨다고 말한다. 그러나 모든 몸이 그러한 기준을 동일하게 ‘소화’할 수는 없으며, 소화되지 못한 감각과 기억들은 종종 기록되지 않은 채 사라지거나, 새로운 기준에 의해 다시 덮인다고 지적한다.

이번 전시에는 조각 16점과 영상 및 설치작품 11점이 소개된다. 이들 작품은 기준에 들지 못한 몸들, 끝내 소화되지 못한 감정과 흔적들을 시각적으로 형상화한다. 특히 전시장 바닥에 비석처럼 놓인 조형물들은 이러한 흔적에 대한 애도이자, 사회가 강요해온 규범에 대한 근본적인 질문으로 읽힌다.

작가는 “기준을 따르지 못한 몸들이 문제가 아니라, 그 기준 자체가 얼마나 왜곡되어 있는가를 물어야 한다”며, 지금 이 순간에도 여전히 ‘소화받지 못한’ 몸들이 존재하고 있다는 사실을 예술을 통해 드러내고자 한다고 밝혔다.

이번 전시는 신체에 대한 사회적 규범을 비판적으로 성찰하게 하는 한편, 개별적 몸의 경험과 감각에 귀 기울일 수 있는 사유의 공간을 제안한다.

Woojin Cultural Space Gallery will be hosting sculptor Han Kang's solo exhibition 'Unassimilated Bodies' from July 3rd to the 16th. This exhibition starts with questioning the ideal body standards set by society and the bodies that have not reached or rejected them.

Han Kang says that society has turned the body into a manipulable object under the guise of efficiency, such as managing the body with methods like '100g of chicken breast, irregular fasting, a cup of coffee instead of a meal.' However, not all bodies can 'assimilate' these standards equally, and the unassimilated sensations and memories often disappear without being recorded or are covered up again by new standards.

The exhibition will feature 16 sculptures, 11 video works, and installations. These works visually represent bodies that do not fit the standards, emotions, and traces that have ultimately not been assimilated. In particular, the sculptures laid out on the floor of the exhibition space like gravestones are seen as a mourning for these traces and as fundamental questions about the norms imposed by society.

The artist stated, "We should not ask what is wrong with bodies that do not meet the standards, but how distorted the standards themselves are." They expressed their intention to reveal that there are still 'unassimilated' bodies existing at this moment through art.

This exhibition critically reflects on the social norms regarding the body while proposing a space for contemplation on individual body experiences and sensations.
