국가유산청(청장 허민)은 오랫동안 마을을 보호해 온 전통 마을 숲인 ‘고창 하고리 삼태마을숲’을 국가지정자연유산 천연기념물로 지정했다.

‘고창 하고리 삼태마을숲’은 고창 성송면 하고리 삼태마을 앞 삼태천을 따라 형성된 800여 미터 길이의 마을 숲으로, 마을 주민들이 각종 자연재해로부터 마을을 지키기 위하여 자발적으로 조성하였다. 바람으로부터 마을을 보호하는 방풍림이자 하천 주변 농경지 등을 보호하기 위하여 제방에 조성된 호안림 역할을 한 숲이다.

또한, 국내 최대 규모의 왕버들 군락지로, 나무 높이 10미터, 줄기 둘레 3미터가 훌쩍 넘는 왕버들 노거수 95주를 비롯하여 버드나무, 팽나무, 곰솔, 상수리나무, 벽오동 등 다양한 수종의 큰 나무 224주가 안정적으로 숲을 이루고 있다.

삼태마을 앞에는 삼태천이 흐르고 있어 풍수지리적으로 배 모양인 마을이 떠내려가지 않게 보호하기 위하여 마을 주민들이 삼태천 양 둑에 숲을 조성한 것이라 전하며, 이 숲이 훼손되면 마을에 큰 재앙이 온다고 믿어 신성시하며 보호해 왔다고 한다.

‘전라도무장현도’에서 삼태마을숲을 찾아볼 수 있는데, 이는 1830년대 훨씬 이전부터 이 숲이 존재하였음을 보여주며, 당시에도 이 숲이 무장현에서 유명하고 상징적인 숲이었음을 알 수 있다.
* 전라도무장현도(全羅道茂長縣圖): 19세기 전라도 무장현을 정교하게 그린 지도로, 1835년 이전 제작된 것으로 추정되며, 당시 자연환경과 생활상을 상세히 묘사하고 있음.

‘고창 하고리 삼태마을숲’은 마을 공동체의 신앙과 정체성이 결합된 상징적 가치가 높은 자연유산으로, 주변 농경지 등과 어우러지는 아름다운 경관, 다양한 수종의 노거수들이 안정적으로 숲을 이루는 점 등의 가치를 종합적으로 지녔다.

The Cultural Heritage Administration (Director Heo Min) has designated the traditional village forest that has long protected the village, 'Gochang Hagori Samtae Village Forest,' as a national designated natural monument.

The 'Gochang Hagori Samtae Village Forest' is an 800-meter-long village forest formed along the Samtaecheon in front of Hagori Samtae Village in Seongsong-myeon, Gochang. The villagers voluntarily created this forest to protect the village from various natural disasters. It serves as a windbreak forest to protect the village from the wind and also plays a role in protecting the farmland around the riverbank by being created on the embankment.

Moreover, it is the largest royal willow habitat in Korea, with 224 large trees of various species such as royal willow, zelkova, fir, Japanese cedar, and oak trees, including 95 royal willow trees that exceed 10 meters in height and 3 meters in circumference.

In front of Samtae Village flows the Samtaecheon, and the villagers created the forest on both sides of the riverbank to protect the village, which is shaped like a boat according to Feng Shui principles, from drifting away. It is believed that if this forest is damaged, a great disaster will befall the village, so they have revered and protected it.

You can visit the Samtae Village Forest in 'Jeollado Muchangyeondo,' which shows that this forest has existed since well before the 1830s and was already famous and symbolic in Muchang County at that time.

The 'Gochang Hagori Samtae Village Forest' is a natural heritage of high symbolic value that combines the faith and identity of the village community, with its beautiful landscape harmonizing with the surrounding farmland and the stable presence of various large trees adding to its comprehensive value.
