-1988년 민주화·통일 염원 담은 유서와 기록사진 공개

(사)조성만기념사업회는 오는 17일부터 21일까지 전주 치명자산성지 평화의전당 1층 갤러리 보두네홀에서 ‘통일열사 조성만 유서 서각 전시’를 개최한다. 오픈 행사는 18일 오후 3시에 열린다.

이번 전시에서는 문정현 신부가 서각한 조성만 열사의 유서 9개 판재(총 1,813자)를 비롯해 1988년 민주국민장 당시의 기록사진 20여 점, 복원된 걸개그림 등이 공개된다. 유서를 서각으로 새긴 작품은 당시의 뜨거운 시대정신과 통일에 대한 열망을 생생히 전한다.

이사장 문규현 신부는 “우리 앞의 철조망을 끊어내고, 갈라선 마음의 고리를 불살라 버리며, 북녘 동포와 해외교포, 다국적 인민들과 함께 평화롭게 살 수 있는 세상이 오도록 기도하자”고 밝혔다.

이번 전시는 전북특별자치도, 전주시, 전주해성중·고등학교총동문회, 서울대학교민주동문회, 전북민주화운동기념사업회가 후원한다. 특히 천주교 순교성지인 치명자산성지에서 열린다는 점에서, 조성만 열사의 죽음을 민족 수난의 역사와 맞닿은 ‘순교’의 의미로 되새기는 뜻깊은 시간이 될 것으로 기대된다.

한편, 조성만 열사는 서울대학교 화학과 재학 중이던 1988년 5월 15일, 명동성당 교육관 옥상에서 양심수 석방, 미군 철수, 남북 올림픽 공동개최, 한반도의 평화와 통일을 외치며 자필 유서를 뿌리고 할복 투신했다. 그의 죽음은 분단과 독재의 시대를 넘어 평화와 통일을 향한 청년의 절절한 외침으로 남아 있다.

The Cho Sung-man Memorial Foundation will hold an exhibition titled 'Will and Engraved Writings Exhibition of Patriot Cho Sung-man' at the Bodeunehall Gallery on the 1st floor of the Peace Hall at Chimekjasan Holy Site in Jeonju from the 17th to the 21st. The opening event will take place on the 18th at 3 p.m.

In this exhibition, nine wills (totaling 1,813 characters) written by Patriot Cho Sung-man and engraved by Father Moon Jung-hyun will be displayed, along with around 20 record photos from the democratic movement in 1988 and restored tapestries. The works engraved with the wills vividly convey the fervent spirit of the time and the desire for unification.

Chairman Father Moon Gyu-hyun stated, "Let us pray for a world where we can peacefully live together with our North Korean compatriots, overseas Koreans, and people from various nations by breaking down the iron fences in front of us and melting the frozen links of our hearts."

This exhibition is sponsored by Jeollabuk Special Self-Governing Province, Jeonju City, Jeonju Haeseong Middle and High School Alumni Association, Seoul National University Alumni Association for Democracy, and Jeollabuk Democratization Movement Memorial Foundation. Particularly significant as it is held at Chimekjasan Holy Site, a Catholic martyrdom site, it is expected to be a meaningful time to reflect on the meaning of 'martyrdom' in connection with the historical suffering of the nation related to Patriot Cho Sung-man's death.

Patriot Cho Sung-man, who was a student in the Chemistry Department at Seoul National University, scattered his handwritten will on the rooftop of the Education Hall of Myeongdong Cathedral on May 15, 1988, calling for the release of conscientious objectors, withdrawal of U.S. forces, joint hosting of the Olympics by North and South Korea, and peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula before throwing himself in traditional Korean attire. His death remains as a poignant cry of a young man towards peace and unification, transcending the era of division and dictatorship.
