전라북도 군산시 창오초등학교(교장 김용훈)는 11월 10일부터 17일까지 운영 중인 2025학년도 독서교육주간을 맞아 10일 오전 정담어린이책연구소(강사 손미영)와 협력해 전교생이 참여하는 그림책 독서놀이 활동을 진행했다.

이번 프로그램은 ‘책으로 여는 생태 감수성과 창의 예술 감각’을 주제로, 그림책을 읽고 주제와 연계한 체험활동을 통해 독서의 즐거움과 생태적 감수성을 함께 기르는 데 초점을 맞췄다.

학년별 수준에 따라 ▲개운죽 반려식물 만들기 ▲수제 천연비누 제작 ▲나만의 나무 그림책 만들기 등 창의적이고 실생활과 연계된 활동이 진행돼 학생들의 호응을 얻었다.

5학년 박○○ 학생은 “그림책 속 나무처럼 내가 심은 식물도 잘 자랐으면 좋겠어요. 내가 만든 비누로 지구를 지킬 수 있다는 게 재미있어요.”라고 소감을 말했다.

창오초는 독서교육주간을 맞아 ‘신간 도서 인증샷’, ‘한 줄 북토크’, ‘교실 속 독후활동’ 등 학생이 주도적으로 참여하는 다양한 독서 프로그램도 함께 운영하고 있다. 학교는 이를 통해 ‘책 읽는 학교, 생각이 자라는 아이들’을 목표로 읽기·쓰기 중심의 교육활동을 학교 전반으로 확산시키고 있다.

김용훈 교장은 “그림책은 단순한 읽기 자료를 넘어 아이들의 상상력과 감수성을 키우는 훌륭한 교육 매개체”라며 “정담어린이책연구소와 협업한 이번 활동을 통해 작은 학교의 장점을 살린 따뜻한 배움의 장이 되었다”고 말했다.

창오초는 앞으로도 독서·생태·예술을 융합한 특색 있는 교육과정을 지속적으로 운영하며, 작지만 알찬 ‘책 읽는 학교’로서의 정체성을 강화해 나갈 계획이다.

Chango Elementary School in Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do (Principal Kim Yong-hoon) held a picture book reading and play activity involving all students in collaboration with Jungdam Children's Book Research Institute (Instructor Son Mi-young) on the morning of the 10th as part of the 2025 Reading Education Week being held from November 10th to 17th.

This program focused on "Opening Ecological Sensibility and Creative Artistic Sense through Books," aiming to cultivate the joy of reading and ecological sensitivity together through reading picture books and engaging in experiential activities related to the theme.

Creative and practical activities such as making companion plants with succulents, crafting handmade natural soap, and creating personalized tree picture books were conducted according to the grade levels, receiving positive responses from the students.

5th grader Park ○○ expressed, "I hope the plants I grow will thrive like the trees in the picture books. It's fun to think that I can protect the Earth with the soap I made."

In conjunction with the Reading Education Week, Chango Elementary is also running various reading programs where students take the lead, such as 'New Book Selfie,' 'One-line Book Talk,' and 'Post-reading Activities in the Classroom.' The school aims to spread literacy and writing-centered educational activities throughout the school under the goal of 'a school where reading leads to growing thoughts.'

Principal Kim Yong-hoon stated, "Picture books are not just simple reading materials but excellent educational tools that enhance children's imagination and sensitivity," adding, "Through this activity in collaboration with Jungdam Children's Book Research Institute, we have created a warm learning environment that leverages the strengths of a small school."

Chango Elementary School plans to continue operating a distinctive curriculum that integrates reading, ecology, and art, enhancing its identity as a small yet substantial 'reading school' in the future.
