<무언가 잡으려면 무언가 놓칠 수 밖에_수성목판_2025>

청년작가 김하윤이 9일부터 21일까지 전주 서학동사진미술관에서 개인전 ‘모험담 冒險談’을 연다. 이번 전시는 그동안 한국화(채색화)를 기반으로 작업해 온 작가가 판화라는 새로운 매체로 확장해 선보이는 자리로, 약 30여 점의 신작과 근래 작업을 함께 소개한다.

전시 제목 ‘모험담(冒險談)’은 ‘험함을 무릅쓰고 앞으로 나아가는 이야기’를 뜻한다. 작가에게 모험은 특별한 사건이 아니라, 일상 속에서 마주하는 흔들림·두려움·기대와 같은 감정들을 받아들이며 하루를 건너가는 태도에 가깝다. 이러한 내면의 사유는 나뭇가지, 덩굴, 열매 등 자연의 이미지로 은유화되어 화면 속에 자리해 왔다. 반복되는 일상 속에서 마주한 감흥과 결실, 성찰의 순간들은 ‘열매’의 형상으로 시각화되며, 자연의 섭리 속에서 삶의 의미를 어떻게 발견하고 보존하는지를 질문한다.

이번 전시의 중심에는 작가가 처음으로 선보이는 수성목판화(水性木版画)가 있다. 수성 안료를 직접 조색해 판 위에 올리고, 습을 머금은 한지 위에 손으로 압력을 가해 찍어내는 전통적 인쇄 방식으로, 번짐·어긋남·나무결의 흔적이 그대로 나타나는 것이 특징이다. 특히 매 인쇄 과정에서 농도와 수분, 안료의 자리 이동이 달라지기 때문에, 동일한 판에서도 서로 다른 표정이 나타나는 단일성이 두드러진다. 작가는 이러한 우연성을 회화의 서정성과 결합해 새로운 조형 실험으로 확장하고자 한다.

김하윤은 2017년부터 ‘느린 꽃놀이’ 연작을 이어오며, 나무늘보라는 자아적 상징을 통해 삶을 ‘길 위의 여정’으로 바라보는 시선을 발전시켜 왔다. 주로 한국화(채색화)로 표현되었던 자연의 이미지와 내면적 서사는 이번 전시에서 수성목판화의 물성과 감각으로 다시 변주된다. 또한 2022년부터 병행해 온 동판화 작업(에칭, 메조틴트)도 함께 소개되어, 회화에서 판화로 이어지는 작가의 조형적 확장 흐름을 확인할 수 있다.

작가는 “자연으로부터의 감흥을 내면화하고 깨달음을 얻는 과정은 결국 나의 삶을 바라보는 하나의 방식이며, 그 작은 흔적들이 누군가의 또 다른 모험담과 자연스레 닿을 수 있다면 큰 기쁨이 될 것”이라고 전했다.

김하윤은 2017년 첫 개인전 이후 ‘울퉁불퉁 간다’(2022), ‘징검_가지’(2024)를 포함해 6회의 개인전과 국내·외 단체전 60여 회에 참여하며 작업 세계를 꾸준히 확장하고 있다.

"To grasp something, you must let go of something else"_Kim Ha-yoon's Solo Exhibition "Adventure Tales" with Water-based Woodblock Prints in 2025

Young artist Kim Ha-yoon will hold a solo exhibition titled "Adventure Tales" at the Seohak-dong Photo Art Museum in Jeonju from the 9th to the 21st. This exhibition is an opportunity for the artist, who has been working based on traditional Korean painting (color painting), to expand into printmaking as a new medium, showcasing around 30 new pieces and recent works.

The exhibition title "Adventure Tales" signifies stories of moving forward despite difficulties. For the artist, adventure is not about extraordinary events but rather an attitude of facing emotions like uncertainty, fear, and anticipation encountered in daily life. These inner reflections have been metaphorically represented in the images of branches, vines, fruits, and other elements of nature on the canvas. Moments of inspiration, fruition, and contemplation encountered in the repetitive daily life are visualized in the form of "fruits," questioning how one discovers and preserves the meaning of life within the order of nature.

At the core of this exhibition is the artist's first presentation of water-based woodblock prints. Using water-based pigments directly applied to the block and pressing it by hand onto moistened paper, this traditional printing method retains traces of smudging, misalignment, and wood grain. Particularly, due to variations in concentration, moisture, and pigment movement during each printing process, a distinct singularity emerges, showcasing different expressions even from the same block. The artist aims to combine this randomness with the lyricism of painting to expand into new sculptural experiments.

Since 2017, Kim Ha-yoon has been continuing the series "Slow Flower Play," evolving the perspective of life as a 'journey on the road' through the personal symbol of a tree sloth. The images of nature and inner narratives previously expressed mainly in traditional Korean painting are reinterpreted through the materiality and sensation of water-based woodblock prints in this exhibition. Additionally, the simultaneous exploration of copperplate printmaking (etching, mezzotint) since 2022 is also introduced, allowing viewers to trace the artist's formal expansion from painting to printmaking.

The artist expressed, "Internalizing inspiration from nature and gaining enlightenment is ultimately a way of looking at my life, and if these small traces can naturally connect with someone else's adventure tales, it would bring great joy."

Since the first solo exhibition in 2017, Kim Ha-yoon has continuously expanded her artistic world through six solo exhibitions including "Bumpy Path" (2022), "Silent_ Branch" (2024), and participation in over 60 domestic and international group exhibitions.
