Jeonbuk Spinal Cord Injury Association Completes 'Cycling Tour of the 5 Major Rivers'... Embarks on Nakdong River Trail
People with spinal cord injuries who have been overcoming their limits by cycling across the country with handcycles are about to put the final mark on the '5 Major Rivers Cycling Route Tour'.
The Jeonbuk Spinal Cord Disability Association embarked on the '2026 Handcycle Nakdong River Cycling Route Tour' in two phases, from May 6th to 9th (1st phase) and from September 10th to 12th (2nd phase).
Supported by the Jeonbuk Community Chest of Korea, this event, which has been ongoing since 2019, is expected to be the most meaningful installment of the association's long-distance cycling project. The association has conquered the Seomjin River, Geum River, Yeongsan River, and Han River cycling routes in succession, and with the completion of the Nakdong River section, they will achieve the feat of completing the cycling routes of the 5 major rivers in South Korea.
The Spinal Cord Disability Association's handcycle program was initiated for the health promotion and fostering of a spirit of challenge among individuals with spinal cord injuries. Participants have been honing their skills by completing individual and group training sessions ranging from once a week to seven times a week.
Their progress so far has been remarkable. In 2019, they cycled from Jeonju to Naju. In 2020, they completed the Seomjin River cycling route tour, in 2021, they cycled round trip from Jeonju to Saemangeum Barrage, in 2022, they completed the Geum River cycling route tour, in 2023, they cycled from Imjingak to the end of the land, and from 2024 to 2025, they toured the Yeongsan River, Bukhangang, Han River, and Arabetgil (approximately 155km).
Following the successful completion of the Han River tour last year, where 6 handcycle cyclists and a support team of 13 individuals completed the journey together, this year they are eagerly cycling the Nakdong River route.
Handcycling holds more significance than just exercise for individuals with lower body paralysis due to spinal cord injuries. It provides a relatively safe and fast-paced experience from obstacles on the road, allowing participants to face the natural scenery solely with their own strength and determination, resulting in a high sense of personal achievement.
An official from the Jeonbuk Spinal Cord Disability Association expressed gratitude, stating, "Thanks to the support of the Jeonbuk Community Chest of Korea and the dedication of volunteers, this tour, where disabled and non-disabled individuals come together along the lush Nakdong River, was made possible." They added, "As this marks the final journey of the 5 Major Rivers Tour, we hope all participants can safely complete it and enjoy the sense of victory in overcoming their disabilities."
