Jeonju City Operates 'Healing Garden Classroom' for People with Disabilities and Caregivers... Relieving Depression through Healing Agriculture
The Jeonju City Health Center and the Jeonju City Agricultural Technology Center have received a great response in supporting emotional recovery and alleviating depression for local people with disabilities and their caregivers through healing agriculture.
The Jeonju City Health Center (Director Kim Shin-sun) announced that from May 13 to July 8, a total of 8 sessions were held at the Deokjin Health Center's 3rd floor health education room, targeting 15 people with disabilities and their caregivers residing in Jeonju City. They operated a healing agriculture program called 'Healing Garden Classroom' in collaboration with the Jeonju City Agricultural Technology Center (Director Kang Se-kwon).
This program, which ran for about 2 months, was designed to allow people with disabilities who face social and physical limitations in outdoor activities to experience nature indoors, providing them with psychological stability, a sense of accomplishment, and assistance in physical function recovery.
Under the guidance of a specialized healing agriculture instructor, the program consisted of various horticultural activities such as making companion plants using soil, creating colorful flower baskets, making dried flower bouquets, and planting herb pots. Participants were able to stimulate their senses by touching flowers and soil, adding vitality to their daily lives.
In particular, the activity of planting and grooming plants was evaluated to have a positive impact on physical rehabilitation, such as developing hand muscles and expanding joint mobility. It was also noted that completing their own artwork through this experience helped boost self-esteem and alleviate depression.
After the program ended, the Jeonju City Health Center plans to guide participants in various disability rehabilitation health programs, such as group and visitation rehabilitation exercise services, social participation programs, disability prevention and promotion projects, to ensure continuous health management for people with disabilities, supporting their ongoing social participation and health promotion.
