탄소를 소재로 한 특별한 문화예술 전시가 전주시민과 관광객들을 맞이한다.

전주문화재단과 국민연금공단은 17일부터 내달 30일까지 국민연금공단 본부 행복연금관 로비에서 탄소예술 프로젝트 초대전 「탄소, 경계를 넘다(CARBON: Beyond Boundaries)」를 개최한다.

이번 전시는 전주문화재단이 2021년부터 추진해 온 ‘탄소예술 프로젝트’의 축적된 창작 성과를 공공기관으로 확산하고, 탄소예술 분야에서 활동하는 지역 청년 예술가들에게 창작활동 및 작품 발표의 기회를 지원하기 위해 마련됐다.

재단은 지역 특화산업인 탄소산업과 현대예술의 접목을 시도하며, 탄소소재를 새로운 예술적 매체로 확장하는 ‘탄소예술(Carbon Art)’ 분야를 지속해서 개척해 왔다. 실제로 2021년부터 현재까지 창작지원과 기획전시를 통해 46명의 예술가를 발굴·육성하고 150여 점의 탄소예술 작품 제작을 지원한 바 있다.

탄소예술 프로젝트는 단순히 산업소재를 예술작품에 활용하는 데 그치지 않고, 예술가들이 탄소섬유와 탄소복합재 등 낯선 산업소재의 물성과 가능성을 탐구해 회화·조각·설치 등 다양한 현대예술 언어로 전환하도록 지원하고 있다. 아울러 산업 현장에서 활용되지 못한 탄소소재를 예술의 매체로 재탄생시킴으로써 자원 순환과 지속가능성이라는 ESG의 사회적 가치를 예술적 방식으로 환기한다는 점에서 의미를 더하고 있다.

이번 초대전에는 탄소예술 프로젝트를 통해 활동해 온 작가 13명이 참여한다. 이들의 창작품 17점과 전주문화재단 소장품 3점을 더해 총 20점의 작품을 선보이며, 탄소가 산업의 영역을 넘어 예술적 매체로 변화하는 다채로운 가능성을 제시한다.

양 기관의 전시 업무협약을 바탕으로 문화재단은 지역 특화산업 기반의 예술가 발굴과 창작을 지원하고, 공공기관은 보유 공간을 작품 발표와 시민 향유의 장으로 제공했다. 이를 통해 공공기관과 지역문화재단이 상생하는 지속 가능한 문화예술 협력 모델을 구축했다.

특히 공단 본부 로비라는 일상 공간에서 전시가 진행됨에 따라, 임직원과 방문객에게 일상 속 문화예술 향유 기회를 제공하고 지역 특화산업의 문화적 가치를 공유하는 계기가 될 것으로 기대된다.

김철민 재단 미래문화실장은 “이번 초대전은 그동안 지역에서 축적해 온 탄소예술의 성과가 공공기관이라는 새로운 공간과 관객을 만나 확장되는 뜻깊은 자리”라며 “앞으로도 작가들이 지속 성장할 수 있는 기반을 마련하는 한편, 창작지원에서 전시, 산업 협력, 유통과 국제교류로 이어지는 탄소예술 생태계를 구축해 나갈 계획”이라고 말했다.

국민연금공단 관계자는 “이번 전시가 지역 청년예술가에게 새로운 작품 발표의 기회가 되고, 임직원과 방문객에게는 지역 산업과 예술이 만나 빚어낸 새로운 문화적 가치를 경험하는 계기가 되기를 기대한다”며 “앞으로도 공단의 공간을 지역사회와 예술가를 위한 열린 문화공간으로 적극 활용해 나가겠다”고 전했다.

A special cultural art exhibition using carbon as a material welcomes the citizens of Jeonju and tourists.

The Jeonju Cultural Foundation and the National Pension Service will host the Carbon Art Project Invitation Exhibition "CARBON: Beyond Boundaries" at the lobby of the National Pension Service Headquarters from the 17th of this month to the end of next month.

This exhibition was organized to spread the accumulated creative achievements of the "Carbon Art Project" initiated by the Jeonju Cultural Foundation since 2021 to public institutions and to provide opportunities for young local artists working in the field of carbon art to engage in creative activities and present their works.

The foundation has been pioneering the field of "Carbon Art" by integrating the specialized local industry of carbon with contemporary art, continuously expanding carbon materials as a new artistic medium. In fact, from 2021 to the present, they have discovered and nurtured 46 artists and supported the production of over 150 carbon art pieces through creative support and curated exhibitions.

The Carbon Art Project not only utilizes industrial materials in art pieces but also supports artists in exploring the properties and possibilities of unfamiliar industrial materials such as carbon fiber and carbon composites to transform them into various contemporary art forms like painting, sculpture, and installations. By revitalizing carbon materials unused in industrial settings as a medium for art, it adds meaning by refreshing the societal values of resource circulation and sustainability in an artistic manner under the ESG framework.

Thirteen artists who have been active through the Carbon Art Project will participate in this invitation exhibition. They will showcase a total of 20 pieces, including 17 creative works by these artists and 3 pieces from the Jeonju Cultural Foundation's collection, presenting diverse possibilities of carbon transforming into an artistic medium beyond the realm of industry.

Based on a mutual exhibition agreement between the two institutions, the Cultural Foundation supports the discovery and creation of artists based on the specialized local industry, while the public institution provides exhibition spaces for artwork presentations and citizen enjoyment. Through this, a sustainable cultural art collaboration model has been established between public institutions and local cultural foundations.

Especially as the exhibition takes place in the everyday space of the lobby of the headquarters, it is expected to provide employees and visitors with opportunities to enjoy cultural art in their daily lives and become a chance to share the cultural value of the specialized local industry.

Kim Cheol-min, the head of the Foundation's Future Culture Department, stated, "This invitation exhibition is a significant occasion where the achievements of carbon art accumulated in the region expand by meeting a new space and audience in a public institution." He added, "We plan to continue building an ecosystem of carbon art that connects creative support to exhibitions, industrial cooperation, distribution, and international exchanges, while providing a foundation for artists to continue growing."

A representative from the National Pension Service mentioned, "We hope this exhibition will provide young local artists with new opportunities for presenting their works and offer employees and visitors a chance to experience the new cultural value created by the intersection of local industry and art." They further expressed, "We will actively continue to utilize the institution's spaces as open cultural spaces for the local community and artists."
