전주 서학동사진미술관에서 4월 22일부터 5월 11일까지 열려

전주 서학동예술마을에 위치한 서학동사진미술관에서 오는 4월 22일부터 5월 11일까지 김지연 사진작가의 개인전 《매몰》이 열린다. 이번 전시는 한국전쟁 전후 양민 학살의 흔적을 주제로, 옥양목천 위에 인화한 19점의 사진 작품을 통해 비극의 현장을 시각적으로 되짚는다.

‘매몰(埋沒)’은 제주 4.3사건과 여순사건 등 해방 이후 혼란기(1947~1952)에 벌어진 민간인 학살 사건을 재조명하고자 기획된 전시다. 김지연 작가는 “왜 슬픈 역사는 되풀이되는가?”라는 질문으로 시작해, 2012년 순창과 담양 사이의 한 도로변에서 발견한 ‘양민 학살 매몰 지역’ 현수막을 계기로 이 작업을 시작하게 되었다고 밝혔다. 현장을 직접 촬영하고, 지역 유가족 대표와의 만남을 통해 깊이 있는 취재를 이어갔으며, 이번 전시는 그 기억의 시각적 기록물이다.

전시 서문에서 작가는 “진실과 정의는 죽고 이념만 살아남은 시대의 흔적을 사진에 담았다”며, “정쟁보다 실익을, 당파보다 인간의 존엄을 우선하는 사회가 되기를 바란다”고 밝혔다. 사진에 담긴 장소들은 단지 특정 지역의 기록이 아니라, 한국 사회에 뿌리 깊은 상처이자 오늘날에도 되돌아봐야 할 역사적 교훈으로 제시된다.

김지연 작가는 진안의 공동체 박물관 ‘계남정미소’와 전주 ‘서학동사진미술관’의 관장이자 활발한 사진작업을 이어오고 있는 다큐멘터리 사진가로, 지금까지 17권의 사진집과 3권의 사진 산문집을 출간해왔다. 대표작으로는 『정미소』, 『자영업자』, 『99명의 포옹』 등이 있으며, 빠르게 변화하는 사회의 이면을 조명하는 사진 작업으로 주목을 받아왔다.

이번 전시의 하이라이트 중 하나는 4월 26일(토) 오후 3시에 진행되는 ‘작가와의 대화’ 행사다. 관람객들은 작가와 직접 이야기를 나누며 작품에 담긴 배경과 문제의식을 보다 깊이 있게 이해할 수 있는 기회를 얻게 된다.

전시는 오전 10시 30분부터 오후 6시까지 관람 가능하며, 매주 월요일은 휴관이다. 전시 장소는 전북특별자치도 전주시 완산구 서학로 16-17, 서학동사진미술관이다.

Exhibition at Seohakdong Photo Art Museum in Jeonju from April 22 to May 11

From April 22 to May 11, a solo exhibition titled "Burial" by photographer Kim Ji-yeon will be held at the Seohakdong Photo Art Museum located in Seohakdong Art Village in Jeonju. This exhibition revisits the traces of civilian massacres before and after the Korean War through 19 photographic works printed on oak wood.

"Burial" is an exhibition planned to shed light on civilian massacre incidents that occurred during the period of confusion after liberation (1947-1952), such as the Jeju 4.3 Incident and the Yosu Incident. Kim Ji-yeon started this project after coming across a banner indicating a 'civilian massacre burial site' between Suncheon and Damyang in 2012, questioning why sad history repeats itself. She directly photographed the sites, conducted in-depth research through meetings with local bereaved families, and this exhibition serves as a visual record of those memories.

In the exhibition preface, the artist stated, "I captured the traces of an era where truth and justice die, leaving only ideologies alive in photographs," and expressed her hope for a society that prioritizes practical benefits over conflicts and human dignity over factions. The locations captured in the photographs are not just records of specific areas, but are presented as historical lessons deeply rooted in Korean society that need to be reflected upon even today.

Kim Ji-yeon, a documentary photographer who is the curator of the community museum "Gyenaemjeongmiso" in Jinan and the Seohakdong Photo Art Museum in Jeonju, has been actively engaged in photography work. She has published 17 photo books and 3 photo essay books, with notable works such as "Jeongmiso," "Small Business Owners," and "99 Hugs," drawing attention for her photography work that illuminates the hidden aspects of rapidly changing society.

One of the highlights of this exhibition is the "Conversation with the Artist" event scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, where visitors can engage in direct conversations with the artist to gain a deeper understanding of the background and issues reflected in the artworks.

The exhibition is open for viewing from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and is closed on Mondays. The exhibition venue is the Seohakdong Photo Art Museum at 16-17 Seohak-ro, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeollabuk-do.
