현대인의 고독을 예리하고 섬세한 시선으로 탐구하는 연극 「모퉁이를 돌아 고양이를 만났다」가 오는 9일부터 12일까지 나흘간 창작소극장에서 관객을 맞이한다.

이번 공연은 전주문화재단이 공연예술단체의 지속적인 창작활동을 독려하기 위해 추진하는 ‘2026 공연예술지원’사업의 선정작으로, 그간 의미 있는 무대를 선보여 온 연극 단체 ‘무대지기’의 작품이다.

연극 「모퉁이를 돌아 고양이를 만났다」는 속도와 효율을 다투는 오늘날, 점점 사라져 가는 ‘골목’이라는 공간에 주목한다. 이웃 간의 사람 냄새가 머물고 온기 어린 관계가 이어지던 삶의 터전으로서 골목길을 재조명하며, 그 길목을 스쳐 지나간 다양한 인간 군상을 담아낸 감성 연극이다.

작품은 한 소녀가 우연히 발을 들이게 된 낯선 골목길에서 마주친 사람들의 이야기를 옴니버스 형식으로 풀어낸다. 담벼락 아래 매일 싸우는 이, 잃어버린 강아지를 찾는 이, 아픈 이별을 준비하는 이 등 저마다의 사연을 지닌 이들과의 조우를 통해 현대인이 느끼는 고독을 밀도 높게 담아냈다.

이번 무대는 탄탄한 필력의 김정숙 작가가 극작과 연출을 겸하며, 편성후, 백호영, 송은주, 정유진, 김강옥, 이종화, 이지현, 강정호, 안혜영 등 실력파 연기자 9인이 출연해 관객의 마음을 사로잡을 예정이다.

극단‘무대지기’(대표 안혜영)는 지난 2007년 창단 이후 소시민의 삶을 애정 어린 시선으로 바라보는 작품을 꾸준히 무대에 올리며 지역 사회와 소통해 왔다. 「모퉁이를 돌아 고양이를 만났다」 역시 지난해 초연 이후, 올해 전주문화재단 ‘공연예술지원’의 우수 레퍼토리 부문에 선정되며 작품성과 예술성을 인정받았다.

전주문화재단 사업 관계자는 “빠르게 변화하는 세상 속에서 고립감과 고독을 느끼는 현대인들에게 이번 연극은 진한 울림과 공감을 전하는 이야기가 될 것”이라며 “배우들의 숨소리와 표정 변화까지 생생하게 전달되는 소극장 공연만의 매력을 즐겨보시길 바란다”라고 말했다.

The play "Encountering a Cat Around the Corner" focuses on the disappearing 'alleyways' in today's world that compete for speed and efficiency. It sheds light on the alleyways as the foundation of life where the warmth of relationships between neighbors lingered, capturing various human characters who passed through those alleys in a sentimental play.

The work unfolds the stories of people the protagonist encounters in a strange alleyway she accidentally steps into, in an omnibus format. Through encounters with individuals with their own stories, such as those who fight under a wall every day, those searching for a lost puppy, and those preparing for a painful farewell, it densely portrays the loneliness felt by modern individuals.

This production features the talented playwright Kim Jung-sook, who also directs, along with skilled actors such as Pyeon Hoo, Baek Ho-young, Song Eun-joo, Jung Yoo-jin, Kim Kang-ok, Lee Jong-hwa, Lee Ji-hyun, Kang Jung-ho, and Ahn Hye-young, captivating the hearts of the audience.

The theater group 'Mudaegiji' (represented by Ahn Hye-young), since its establishment in 2007, has consistently put on works that lovingly look at the lives of ordinary citizens and communicate with the local community. "Encountering a Cat Around the Corner" was selected in the excellent repertoire category of this year's Jeonju Cultural Foundation's 'Performing Arts Support' after its premiere last year, recognizing its artistic and creative qualities.

A Jeonju Cultural Foundation official stated, "In a rapidly changing world where people feel isolation and loneliness, this play will be a story that resonates deeply with and empathizes with modern individuals," adding, "We hope the charm of small theater performances, where even the actors' breathing and facial expressions are vividly conveyed, will be enjoyed."
