전북도립미술관(관장 이기전)은 2026 찾아가는 전북도립미술관 시·군 공립미술관 협력전 ‘오프모던 Off-Modern’을 서울분관에서 개최한다고 밝혔다. 이 전시는 도내 7개 공립미술관의 소장품을 한데 모아 소개하는 자리로, 전북도립미술관이 2022년 9월부터 이어온 시·군 연석회의 사업의 연장선에서 마련됐다.

전북도립미술관은 그동안 도내 14개 시·군과 연대하며, 공립미술관이 있는 지역과는 매월 연석회의로, 미술관이 없는 지역과는 전시와 교육프로그램으로 협력을 이어왔다. 그간 협력의 중심에는 각 지역미술관이 수집한 소장품이 있었으며, 이를 매개로 콘텐츠를 공유하고 학예 인력의 역량을 키워왔다.

《오프모던 Off-Modern》은 이러한 협력의 축적 위에서, 소장품을 주제적·담론적 구조로 재구성하도록 시도했다. 전시명은 러시아 출신 미국 문화이론가 스베틀라나 보임(Svetlana Boym, 1959~2015)이 제시한 개념에서 차용했으며, 근대성의 정형화된 흐름에서 비켜난 시각으로 현재를 다시 바라보고자 하는 의미를 담고 있다.

전시는 흐려지는 유토피아, 구체화되는 디스토피아를 주제화하며 참여 공립미술관 7곳(전북도립미술관, 익산예술의전당 미술관, 정읍시립미술관, 남원시립김병종미술관, 김제벽천미술관, 무주군립최북미술관, 순창공립미술관)의 소장품을 통해 텅 빈 유토피아의 징후로 오늘의 사회상을 되비추는 데 중점을 뒀다.

전북도립미술관 관계자는 “그동안의 협력이 소장품을 잇고 공유하는 데 집중했다면, 이번 전시는 그 소장품들이 오늘의 질문에 어떻게 응답할 수 있는지를 살피는 자리”라며 “지역미술관 소장품이 지닌 사유의 가능성을 확인하고, 협력의 지속 방향을 모색하는 계기로 삼고자 한다”고 말했다.

Jeonbuk Provincial Museum (Director Lee Ki-jeon) announced that they will be hosting the collaborative exhibition 'Off-Modern' with city and county public art museums in Jeonbuk at their Seoul branch in 2026. This exhibition will showcase the collections of 7 public art museums in the province, bringing together artworks that have been collected by Jeonbuk Provincial Museum through the ongoing collaborative efforts with city and county art councils since September 2022.

Jeonbuk Provincial Museum has been collaborating with 14 city and county councils in the province, holding monthly joint meetings with areas that have public art museums and organizing exhibitions and educational programs in regions without art museums. The core of this collaboration has been the exchange of collected artworks from each regional art museum, which has been used to share content and enhance the capabilities of cultural and art personnel.

'Off-Modern' attempts to reorganize the collected artworks in a thematic and discursive structure based on the accumulation of such collaborations. The exhibition title is borrowed from a concept proposed by Russian-born American cultural theorist Svetlana Boym (1959-2015), embodying the intention to look at the present from a perspective that deviates from the standardized flow of modernity.

The exhibition focuses on the theme of fading utopias and emerging dystopias, using the collections of 7 participating public art museums (Jeonbuk Provincial Museum, Iksan Arts Center Art Museum, Jeongeup City Art Museum, Namwon City Kim Byeong-jong Art Museum, Gimje Byeokcheon Art Museum, Muju County Choe Buk Art Museum, and Suncheon Public Art Museum) to reflect on today's social issues as signs of an empty utopia.

An official from Jeonbuk Provincial Museum stated, "While past collaborations have focused on connecting and sharing collections, this exhibition will explore how these collections can respond to today's questions," adding, "We aim to examine the potential of reasoning held within the collections of regional art museums and seek directions for continued collaboration."
